Britain’s hospitality sector is poised to save over £3 million on energy bills through a government-funded emissions reduction trial from May 2025 to March 2026, benefiting more than 600 small and medium-sized businesses by cutting costs and carbon emissions while supporting local jobs.

Transforming the Hospitality Sector

The UK government’s new initiative aims to significantly reduce energy costs for the hospitality sector, which includes pubs, cafes, restaurants, and hotels.

By offering free energy and carbon reduction assessments to over 600 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the scheme seeks to cut operational expenses while promoting sustainability.

This effort is crucial as businesses face rising operational costs and energy price volatility.

Practical Steps for Energy Efficiency

  • Fixing insulation gaps to prevent heat loss
  • Upgrading to low-energy lighting systems
  • Adjusting heating settings for optimal efficiency
  • Providing expert advice on reducing energy use
  • Supporting productivity growth by lowering operational costs

The Broader Effect on Communities

This initiative not only benefits business owners but also has a positive ripple effect on communities across the UK.

By reducing energy bills, local pubs and restaurants can reinvest savings into staff or services, enhancing customer experiences.

Additionally, employees gain job security and potential growth opportunities as businesses become more resilient.

Sustainability Efforts in Context

This trial aligns with ongoing efforts towards net-zero emissions in the UK. It builds upon previous government strategies like the Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy and Plan for Change.

The £350,000 investment reflects a commitment to practical sustainability measures that support SMEs in their transition towards greener operations.

Voices from the Industry

“Pubs, restaurants and cafes are a cornerstone for communities across the country,”

said Sarah Jones MP, Minister for Industry at the UK Government.

“By providing business owners with expert advice to cut bills and reduce emissions, this will help them keep more money in their pockets.”

Mark Chapman, CEO of Zero Carbon Services said

“Climate change is already impacting hospitality. We’ve already helped thousands of UK pubs, restaurants and hotels cut carbon and costs.”
