The American Forces Network (AFN) has launched a new FM radio service at Sasebo Naval Base in Japan, marking a significant milestone after over a decade of planning.

This development enhances communication for U.S. military personnel and their families, reflecting strong U.S.-Japan relations and military cooperation.

The American Forces Network (AFN) has successfully introduced an FM radio service at Sasebo Naval Base in Japan. This achievement comes after more than ten years of meticulous planning and collaboration with the Japanese government.

The new FM frequency, 93.1 FM, is set to provide local audiences with popular music, news, command information, and critical alerts.

This launch marks the first time in over 70 years that AFN has established an FM frequency in Japan. The previous AM tower was dismantled in 2017, making this development particularly noteworthy.

The effort involved overcoming various technical challenges through close cooperation between the Japanese government and U.S. military personnel.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The introduction of AFN’s FM service underscores the ongoing positive diplomatic relations between the United States and Japan.

The successful collaboration highlights mutual support and shared interests in maintaining regional security through effective communication channels for U.S. military personnel stationed overseas.

Strategic Developments

  • AFN’s new FM frequency enhances communication capabilities for U.S. forces in Japan.
  • This initiative reflects strong diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Japan.
  • The project involved overcoming significant technical challenges collaboratively.
  • Improved communication supports emergency response readiness in the region.

Technical Achievements

Scott Williams, AFN-Pacific’s deputy director, played an instrumental role in planning and executing this launch. He noted that establishing a new FM frequency had not been done by AFN-Pacific anywhere else in the Pacific region before now.

Kenneth Burton led AFN-Pacific’s technical services team to address complex technical aspects of this project successfully. He said:

Working with the Japanese government on getting this frequency has been a unique experience.

Final Thoughts
