The UK-funded Nabadaynta Soomaaliya Programme is expanding its innovative “Townhall” meetings across Somalia to strengthen community-led peacebuilding and justice.

Following early successes in Kismayo and Baidoa, the initiative has now extended to Doolow and Xudur, bringing together local authorities, security officials, and marginalized groups to collaboratively address security and justice concerns.

Empowering Communities for Lasting Peace

The Nabadaynta Soomaaliya Programme, managed by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and co-funded by the UK and EU, is making significant strides in fostering community-led peacebuilding in Somalia.

By expanding its Townhall meetings to Doolow and Xudur, the programme continues to empower Somali communities to shape local solutions.

Each session involves 50–100 participants from diverse backgrounds, including displaced individuals, marginalized groups, local officials, and police.

This initiative has already led to tangible outcomes such as increased patrols in Baidoa and the shutdown of a black market for stolen phones in Kismayo.

These practical changes highlight the effectiveness of community engagement in addressing security challenges.

Benefits of Community-Led Initiatives

  • Empowers communities to develop tailored solutions
  • Increases trust between local authorities and residents
  • Addresses specific security concerns effectively
  • Promotes inclusivity by involving marginalized groups
  • Enhances transparency in decision-making processes

The UK’s Role in Global Peacebuilding Efforts

The UK’s involvement as a major funder underscores its commitment to international peacebuilding. This initiative not only enhances the reputation of UK-based NGOs but also opens new opportunities for collaboration with international partners like IOM.

The success of these Townhalls could inspire similar approaches in other conflict-affected regions.

Insights from Industry Leaders

British Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, emphasizes the importance of community-led solutions:

“The UK is proud to support initiatives like Nabadaynta that put communities at the heart of justice and peace building.”

His statement reflects a broader commitment to fostering sustainable development through participatory approaches.

A Model for Future Development Projects?

The expansion of Townhall meetings across Somalia highlights a scalable model that could inform future UK policy on international aid.

By emphasizing transparency and trust-building, this programme aligns with global goals for sustainable development.

However, ensuring sustained local ownership remains a challenge that requires careful management.
