An overnight maritime operation off Puerto Rico’s coast resulted in the seizure of over half a ton of cocaine, exposing the ongoing battle to secure U.S. borders from transnational criminal networks.

Introduction

On June 2, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations (AMO) intercepted a vessel south of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, carrying 1,155 pounds of cocaine.

Three individuals from the Dominican Republic were arrested, and an assault rifle was seized. The interdiction reflects growing efforts to combat maritime drug trafficking.

Swift Interdiction Highlights AMO’s Operational Reach

The successful operation unfolded in the Caribbean’s maritime corridors, where smuggling routes remain active despite heightened enforcement.

Late on June 2, AMO’s Multi-Role Enforcement Aircraft (MEA) detected a 30-foot yola-type vessel with two outboard engines traveling north, approximately 22 miles south of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico.

Upon detection, the MEA crew relayed the information to the AMO Michel O. Maceda Marine Unit. Supported by a Coastal Interceptor vessel and a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, AMO agents successfully intercepted the vessel near midnight.

Inside, authorities discovered 22 bales of cocaine, an AR-15 style rifle, and three individuals lacking documentation to legally enter the United States.

Coordinated Enforcement Across Air, Sea, and Land

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) took custody of the individuals and the firearm, while the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) assumed responsibility for the seized narcotics.

This multi-agency response underscores how air and maritime domain awareness are pivotal to disrupting smuggling operations before they reach U.S. shores.

“Our teams are committed to protecting the homeland by stopping drug trafficking before it reaches U.S. shores,”

stated Creighton Skeen, Deputy Director of Air and Marine Operations in the Caribbean.

Broader Security Efforts in the Caribbean

This interdiction is part of a larger, sustained strategy to address maritime drug smuggling. The Caribbean’s extensive waterways remain a favored route for transnational criminal organizations attempting to transport narcotics to U.S. territories and the mainland.

Heightened maritime surveillance, the deployment of advanced aircraft, and the integration of sea patrols have become central to U.S. border security efforts.

This approach prevents large drug shipments from reaching land, significantly reducing the strain on local law enforcement and communities.

  • Maritime Domain Awareness: Enhanced radar systems and aerial surveillance detect suspicious vessel activity early.

  • Multi-Agency Collaboration: Federal law enforcement coordinates seamlessly across air, land, and sea to intercept threats.

Local and National Significance

For Puerto Rico and nearby U.S. territories, these operations carry critical local implications. Disrupting smuggling activities protects communities, stabilizes regional security, and deters future criminal activity.

Furthermore, successful drug seizures weaken the financial foundations of transnational criminal organizations, limiting their ability to fund additional illegal enterprises.

These efforts also reflect a broader trend in U.S. border security, where resources and technology are increasingly deployed to maritime environments, complementing traditional land-based operations.

In Conclusion

The recent vessel interdiction south of Puerto Rico demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated maritime security efforts in disrupting drug trafficking operations before they endanger U.S. communities.

As border security strategies evolve, the role of air and marine operations remains essential.
