The UK Atomic Energy Authority and East Midlands Combined County Authority have embarked on a 20-year collaboration to develop fusion energy skills, focusing on apprenticeships and vocational training.

This initiative aims to prepare a skilled workforce for the UK’s first prototype fusion power plant, the STEP project, at West Burton, Nottinghamshire.

Fusion Energy: A New Era for the East Midlands

The partnership between the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) marks a significant step towards advancing fusion energy in the UK.

The collaboration focuses on developing skills through apprenticeships and vocational training to support the UK’s first prototype fusion power plant, known as the STEP project, located at West Burton in Nottinghamshire.

Opportunities for Local Communities

  • The STEP project is expected to create 6,500 full-time jobs.
  • Nearly half of construction roles will require Level 3+ qualifications.
  • About 75% of on-site jobs will need Level 4+ qualifications.
  • Training will evolve with the project’s phases, initially focusing on engineering skills.
  • The initiative leverages local educational institutions to meet industry demands.

Economic Growth and Job Creation

This initiative is poised to significantly impact local communities by creating thousands of job opportunities. The focus on advanced qualifications ensures that these positions are well-paid and future-proof.

By prioritizing local workforce development, this collaboration supports inclusive growth in Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, and Greater Lincolnshire regions.

A Strategic Investment in Clean Energy

The UK government’s £2.5 billion investment in nuclear and fusion energy underscores its commitment to clean energy innovation.

This strategic move not only enhances energy security but also positions the UK as a leader in global clean energy markets.

The potential economic benefits extend beyond job creation to include export opportunities in a market projected to be worth trillions globally.

Voices from Industry Leaders

Nick Walkden from UKAEA emphasizes early workforce development as crucial for success:

“People are the most important element of any programme or project.”

Paul Methven of UK Industrial Fusion Solutions highlights the need for a strong skills pipeline across various disciplines. He said,

“Delivering STEP, and commercial fusion beyond that, will require a strong skills pipeline, not only in STEM subjects, but in every aspect of running a complex business. It is fantastic to see that UKAEA are leading on putting this essential enabler in place now to ensure local people benefit directly from the programme, in addition to ensuring we have the skills needed to deliver STEP.”

Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, stresses inclusive growth by ensuring local people benefit from this emerging industry. She said,

“The East Midlands is planning for our energy future today, and fusion energy is an exciting part of that future. One day – thanks to the Nottinghamshire-based STEP programme – the whole region will benefit from clean, affordable fusion energy.

Right now, my priority is ensuring that local people can get the jobs associated with developing this new industry and its supply chains. This is what inclusive growth in practice looks like – investing smartly to ensure that growth is created, sustained, and experienced by local people.”

Bottom Line

This collaboration between UKAEA and EMCCA represents a pivotal moment for both regional development and national energy strategy.

By investing in skills training today, they are laying the groundwork for sustainable economic growth tomorrow. As fusion technology advances, it promises not only cleaner energy but also new career paths that can transform lives across communities.
