The Nuclear Forensics International Technical Working Group (ITWG) is convening its annual plenary meeting on July 1, 2025, in Bologna, Italy.

This gathering aims to advance nuclear forensics—a scientific discipline crucial for deterring nuclear terrorism and enhancing public safety. The event underscores international cooperation among over 80 experts from 30 countries.

Strengthening Global Security Frameworks

The ITWG was co-founded by the United States in 1995 amidst rising concerns over nuclear terrorism and illicit trafficking of nuclear materials.

This year’s meeting continues to align with broader U.S. and international arms control efforts, reinforcing multilateral security frameworks essential for global safety.

With representatives from more than 60 countries, the ITWG focuses on developing best practices in nuclear forensics.

These efforts are vital for identifying and tracing nuclear materials involved in illicit activities, thereby strengthening homeland security and counterterrorism initiatives.

International Collaboration

  • The ITWG is currently co-chaired by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the European Commission’s Joint Research Center.
  • This partnership reflects strong transatlantic collaboration in advancing nuclear forensic capabilities.
  • Over 80 experts from 30 countries are participating this year, emphasizing shared knowledge and capability development.
  • The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation has played a key leadership role since its inception.

Scientific Leadership and Innovation

Nuclear forensics plays a critical role in deterring nuclear terrorism by scientifically analyzing materials to identify their origin and history.

The U.S., through its leadership roles within the ITWG, maintains prominence in this field, supporting technological innovation crucial for security measures worldwide.

The ongoing collaboration within the ITWG supports global nonproliferation regimes by improving detection capabilities against nuclear threats.

This reduces risks to both U.S. interests and those of allied nations while protecting global trade from potential disruptions caused by nuclear incidents.

Economic Stability Through Security

  • Preventing nuclear terrorism helps safeguard global economic stability.
  • Enhanced forensic capabilities contribute to secure international trade routes.
  • U.S.-led initiatives bolster alliances with European partners through scientific cooperation.
  • Nuclear security frameworks deter potential threats that could impact economic interests globally.
