The electrification and upgrade of the Church Fenton to York rail line, part of the £11 billion Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), was completed on time and on budget as of 5 August 2025.

This milestone enhances travel efficiency across Northern England, reducing journey times and supporting economic growth through job creation and housing development.

Transforming Northern England’s Rail Network

The completion of the Church Fenton to York rail line electrification marks a significant advancement in Northern England’s transportation infrastructure.

This project is part of the broader Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), which aims to improve connectivity between key cities such as Manchester, Leeds, and York.

By reducing journey times by up to eight minutes between Manchester and Leeds, this upgrade promises to enhance daily commutes and business travel.

Economic Growth Through Infrastructure

The TRU project is not just about improving travel times; it also plays a crucial role in stimulating economic growth across the region.

The initiative has created over 5,000 jobs and supports the construction of 6,500 new homes. These developments are expected to boost local economies by providing employment opportunities and addressing housing shortages in areas like York Central and Ravensthorpe.

Environmental Benefits

  • Reduces carbon emissions by an estimated 108,000 tonnes annually
  • Equivalent to removing approximately 23,000 cars from roads each year
  • Supports greener travel options with electric trains
  • Contributes to national environmental goals for sustainable transport

Jobs and Skills Development

A notable aspect of the TRU project is its emphasis on local employment. With 85% of the workforce employed within a 40-mile radius of the route, this initiative strengthens community ties while fostering skills retention in Northern England.

Educational institutions like Kirklees College have partnered with industry leaders to provide training that aligns with project needs, ensuring a skilled workforce for future infrastructure endeavors.

Voices from Stakeholders

“Today is a moment of celebration for a project that will transform train travel for millions,”

said Heidi Alexander, Secretary of State for Transport.

“We are delivering on our Plan for Change by upgrading rail links across the North – slashing journey times between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.”

“It’s fantastic to see how the Transpennine Route Upgrade is delivering real improvements,” added Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire.

“This project will provide more frequent, faster and greener trains.”

Food for Thought

The completion of this phase in the TransPennine Route Upgrade signifies more than just improved train services; it represents a commitment to regional development through enhanced connectivity.

As Northern England continues its transformation into an economically vibrant area with reduced commute times and increased job opportunities, these changes promise lasting benefits for communities across the region.
