The UK government has announced a £426,000 investment to expand AI-enabled investigative tools to all police forces in England and Wales, enhancing efforts against grooming gangs and organised exploitation.

This initiative aims to improve justice outcomes by revisiting over 1,200 closed child sexual exploitation cases.

AI Tools Revolutionizing Police Investigations

The expansion of AI tools under the Tackling Organised Exploitation (TOEX) Programme marks a significant step forward in combating grooming gangs across England and Wales.

Previously available to only 13 police forces, these advanced tools will now be accessible to all 43 forces, enabling more efficient investigations into complex crimes.

Efficiency Gains for Law Enforcement

  • AI tools have been used 12,500 times, saving over £20 million and 16,000 investigator hours.
  • These tools enhance the ability to analyse digital data and translate foreign language texts from seized devices.
  • The initiative supports Operation Beaconport’s review of over 1,200 closed child sexual exploitation cases.

Operation Beaconport: Revisiting Cold Cases

Operation Beaconport is a national policing effort aimed at reviewing previously closed cases of group-based child sexual exploitation.

By leveraging AI technology, this operation seeks to reopen investigations where necessary and deliver justice for survivors. The focus on transparency includes collecting suspect ethnicity data as part of accountability measures.

Voices from Key Figures

“The sexual exploitation of children by grooming gangs is one of the most horrific crimes,”

said Jess Phillips, Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls.

“We must punish perpetrators, provide justice for victims and survivors, and protect today’s children from harm.”

Deputy Chief Constables Becky Riggs and Dave McLaren said,

“This funding gives every force access to proven tools that make a real difference. The TOEX Programme is a powerful example of what we can achieve when we combine operational insight with innovative technology.”

Balancing Technology with Transparency

The dual focus on deploying AI tools alongside collecting suspect ethnicity data reflects the government’s commitment to accountable policing practices. This approach addresses concerns about bias while ensuring fair treatment in sensitive investigations related to grooming gangs.
