From autumn 2025, the UK driving theory test will include questions on CPR and AEDs to improve cardiac arrest survival rates.

This initiative by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) aims to equip millions of learner drivers with life-saving skills, addressing the UK’s low out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival rate.

Enhancing Public Safety Through Driving Tests

The inclusion of CPR and AED questions in the UK driving theory test marks a significant step towards improving public safety. With around 2.4 million theory tests taken annually, this update ensures that new drivers are equipped with essential emergency response skills.

These changes aim to address the UK’s current out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival rate, which is under 10%.

CPR questions will focus on correct hand placement and compression depth, while AED usage questions will educate learners on how to effectively use these devices during emergencies.

The DVSA’s initiative aligns with efforts to reduce preventable deaths by equipping citizens with vital life-saving knowledge.

Life-Saving Skills for Everyday Situations

  • CPR and AED use can increase survival rates to 70% if applied within 3-5 minutes of collapse.
  • Drivers often encounter cardiac emergencies at traffic incidents, roadside, and service areas.
  • The changes will not increase test cost or duration but update existing first aid content.
  • Free CPR and AED training resources are available from Resuscitation Councils of Great Britain for learners.

A Broader Effects on Society

This initiative is not just about passing a test; it has broader implications for society. By integrating these skills into a mandatory assessment, more individuals will be prepared to act confidently in emergencies.

This empowerment could lead to increased survival rates from cardiac arrests, benefiting families, workplaces, and communities across the UK.

The move also supports easier access to first aid knowledge without relying solely on formal training courses. It reflects ongoing efforts by organizations like Save a Life Cymru and Resuscitation Council UK to enhance public awareness of CPR techniques.

A Step Towards Global Leadership in Health Education

The UK’s decision may inspire other countries to adopt similar measures as part of their public health strategies.

By embedding health education into civic responsibilities like driving tests, the UK reinforces its leadership role in innovative health policies.

This approach could enhance its reputation globally while promoting societal resilience through widespread emergency response training.

To Sum Up

This update represents a proactive approach by the DVSA towards enhancing public safety through education. By equipping new drivers with crucial life-saving skills at no additional cost or time burden, this initiative promises long-term benefits for individuals and communities across the UK—potentially setting a precedent for other nations worldwide.
