On Aug. 11, President Donald J. Trump declared a crime emergency in Washington, D.C. and directed the National Guard to assist law enforcement.

Within 24 hours, nearly 800 Guard members were on the ground, providing a visible presence across the city and reinforcing efforts to improve public safety.

Introduction

The National Guard has deployed to Washington, D.C. following a presidential declaration of a crime emergency.

Nearly 800 troops are now working alongside local and federal law enforcement to patrol monuments, support traffic control and enhance public safety. Their presence is designed to reassure residents and deter criminal activity.

Mission and Responsibilities

According to Army Lt. Col. John E. Landry, the Guard’s role is focused on deterrence and visible support. Troops are stationed in key areas, conducting patrols and assisting law enforcement partners.

While they are not authorized to carry out arrests, they may temporarily detain individuals to prevent harm until police assume custody.

Guardsmen are equipped with protective gear, but their weapons remain secured in armories unless circumstances require otherwise. Current deployments primarily rely on multipurpose vehicles, with future resources to be adjusted according to operational needs.

Scope of the Deployment

As of this week, about 680 soldiers from the D.C. Army National Guard and 130 airmen from the D.C. Air National Guard are deployed. They operate under Joint Task Force District of Columbia, coordinating with the Metropolitan Police Department and federal agencies.

Their duties include:

  • Supporting monument and facility security

  • Assisting with traffic control and community patrols

State Support and Reinforcements

While D.C. has received immediate assistance, state-level support is expanding. West Virginia has authorized Guard units for mobilization, and governors from Mississippi, South Carolina and Ohio have indicated future commitments.

The exact number of reinforcements from these states has not yet been confirmed.

Early Impact and Community Engagement

Pentagon officials report that Guard members are already making an impact. Last week, Air Force Staff Sgt. Hector Amaya of the D.C. Air National Guard assisted a National Park Service officer who was assaulted while directing traffic.

Amaya detained the suspect until police took custody, underscoring the Guard’s role in protecting both civilians and law enforcement.

Service members on the National Mall are also interacting with visitors and residents. Photographs, conversations and routine patrols are building goodwill, with many civilians expressing appreciation for the Guard’s presence.

Human Side of the Mission

Amaya, who grew up in the Washington metropolitan area, emphasized the importance of community connection.

“I want people to see that we’re human beings, we’re their neighbors, we’re their friends and we’re just here to help,” he said.

This approach highlights the Guard’s efforts to balance security operations with community trust. By showing a neighborly presence, troops aim to reduce fear while supporting law enforcement during a heightened period of concern.

Deployment Overview

Deployment Area Approx. Numbers Primary Tasks
D.C. Army National Guard 680 soldiers Patrols, monument security, traffic
D.C. Air National Guard 130 airmen Community patrols, facility protection
Supporting States (mobilized) Pending Reinforcements and extended support

Looking Ahead

Officials note that requirements may evolve in the coming weeks as security needs change. The Guard’s mission is expected to remain focused on providing reassurance, deterring crime and supporting law enforcement while maintaining strong community ties.

Wrapping Up

The deployment of the National Guard to Washington, D.C. represents a significant step in addressing rising safety concerns under a declared crime emergency.

With nearly 800 troops assisting police and federal partners, the Guard is working to secure landmarks, protect residents and reinforce public trust.
