The UK Ministry of Defence has announced a £118 million investment in six new Land Ceptor air defence missile launchers, doubling the UK’s deployable Sky Sabre systems.

This move supports up to 140 jobs across the country, particularly at MBDA’s Bolton site, enhancing national security and economic growth.

Strengthening UK Air Defence

The acquisition of six new Land Ceptor missile launchers marks a significant enhancement in the UK’s air defence capabilities. These advanced systems are part of the Sky Sabre network, designed to intercept cruise missiles, aircraft, and drones with exceptional precision.

The investment not only bolsters national security but also aligns with the UK government’s Plan for Change and Strategic Defence Review, emphasizing defence as a catalyst for economic growth.

Economic Benefits for Local Communities

  • The contract supports up to 140 jobs across the UK.
  • MBDA’s Bolton site benefits significantly from this investment.
  • Expansion at Bolton includes an additional 700 jobs recently announced.
  • Defence industry workers gain job security and growth prospects.
  • Local communities near MBDA facilities experience economic uplift.

Technological Advancements in Missile Systems

The Land Ceptor systems represent a technological leap over previous air defence solutions like Rapier.

Capable of guiding 24 missiles simultaneously to intercept multiple targets, these systems can hit tennis-ball sized objects traveling at twice the speed of sound.

Such precision underscores the UK’s cutting-edge missile technology and its potential spillover benefits for civilian aerospace sectors.

A Broader European Security Context

The deployment of Sky Sabre in Poland under Operation Stifftail highlights the UK’s commitment to NATO’s eastern flank amid rising geopolitical tensions in Europe.

This strategic move enhances joint defence readiness through interoperability with allied forces via Link 16, reinforcing collective security efforts across Europe.

Industry Leaders’ Perspectives

Chris Allam, Managing Director of MBDA UK, emphasized that this contract builds on their strategic partnership with the Ministry of Defence.

He noted that manufacturing more launchers will sustain job growth and support vital supply chain partners.

Minister for the Armed Forces, Luke Pollard MP, said:

“We are delivering on the Strategic Defence Review by equipping our armed forces with state-of-the art equipment to help keep us safe. Doubling our deployable Sky Sabre capability will strengthen the UK’s air defences, protect UK forces abroad, and deter our adversaries.”

“Through this investment we are supporting over 100 jobs across the UK, with more to come. We are implementing the government’s Plan for Change with defence as an engine to drive growth, boosting our industrial capacity and national prosperity.”
