U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in New York carried out multiple arrests and narcotics seizures during the holiday weekend, demonstrating the agency’s ongoing vigilance in protecting U.S. borders and collaborating with state law enforcement partners.

Busy Weekend Across Border Crossings

Between August 29 and September 1, CBP officers at the Ports of Buffalo, Champlain, Massena, Rainbow Bridge, and Lewiston Bridge conducted arrests and confiscated contraband.

Offenses included felony warrants, narcotics possession, and weapons violations. Officials say these actions reflect a broader effort to secure U.S. borders during periods of heightened travel.

Arrests at Champlain and Buffalo

At the Port of Champlain, officers arrested a 25-year-old U.S. citizen with an outstanding kidnapping warrant from New York. After confirmation, the suspect was transferred to New York State Police.

Meanwhile, at the Port of Buffalo, officers intercepted two marijuana shipments totaling over four kilograms. One shipment was misdeclared as “sea cucumbers,” while another was hidden inside a jacket. Both were seized as evidence of smuggling attempts.

Weapons and Narcotics Discoveries

On August 30, officers at Buffalo’s Rainbow Bridge arrested a 29-year-old U.S. citizen carrying firearms, ammunition, and magazines. He was charged by state police with felony weapon possession.

At Massena, officers made two separate arrests involving narcotics and active warrants. One case involved a 31-year-old North American Indian woman found with a controlled substance.

Another arrest involved a 57-year-old Canadian citizen wanted in Florida for dangerous drug charges.

Additional Arrests and Warrant Cases

The busy weekend concluded with arrests at Rainbow Bridge and Lewiston Bridge. Officers apprehended individuals wanted for assault, probation violations, and obscene material possession.

All suspects were processed and turned over to state police for extradition where applicable.

Arrests and Seizures During New York Holiday Weekend

Location Incident
Champlain 25-year-old U.S. citizen arrested on kidnapping warrant
Buffalo Two marijuana shipments seized, misdeclared cargo and concealed packages
Rainbow Bridge 29-year-old arrested with firearms and ammunition
Massena Narcotics possession and dangerous drug warrant cases
Lewiston Bridge Arrests for probation violation and obscene material possession

Broader Security Points

The weekend operations highlight CBP’s ability to coordinate across multiple ports while working closely with state authorities.

Officers relied on the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database to identify fugitives with warrants ranging from assault to drug trafficking.

Officer Statement

Assistant Director Field Operations Buffalo Richard Roberts praised the officers, stating that their vigilance and professionalism

“underscored CBP’s unwavering focus on protecting the homeland and disrupting illegal activities that threaten communities.”

Community and Regional Effects

These actions carry significance for communities along New York’s border crossings. Increased enforcement acts as a deterrent against smuggling and fugitive movement while reinforcing trust in CBP’s protective role.

  • Residents benefit from enhanced public safety when fugitives are quickly removed from circulation.

  • Employers and travelers are reminded of the agency’s thorough inspections and commitment to compliance.

On-going Vigilance

CBP will continue to expand its enforcement strategies during high-traffic periods such as holiday weekends. With multiple ports under constant surveillance, officials emphasize the importance of vigilance, rapid response, and seamless cooperation with state and local partners.

The Takeaway

The arrests and seizures across New York during the holiday weekend illustrate CBP’s dual role of border protection and law enforcement coordination.

From narcotics smuggling to fugitive apprehension, officers demonstrated a clear commitment to security.
