In the face of ongoing maritime harassment, the Philippines stands resolute in defending its territory and personnel.

Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. declared that Filipino troops would “respond appropriately” to any further incidents of harassment in the West Philippine Sea.

Proportional Defense Under Rules of Engagement

General Brawner emphasized that the Armed Forces of the Philippines follows strict Rules of Engagement, allowing for self-defense with proportional force.

This means that if Filipino troops are attacked with knives, they will defend themselves with similar weapons rather than escalating to firearms.

“We will apply the same level of force that would allow us to defend ourselves,”

Brawner stated during an interview at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. He reiterated the concept of proportionality:

“We will not resort to excessive use of force. So we will not shoot them.”

Commitment to the Mandate

The Armed Forces of the Philippines’s stance is clear—Filipino troops will not allow themselves to be bullied and will continue fulfilling their mandate in compliance with the law.

This commitment comes in the wake of a June 17 incident where Chinese Coast Guard personnel threatened Filipino troops with knives and other weapons during a resupply mission to the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal.

The Chinese forces not only threatened Armed Forces of the Philippines personnel but are also reported to have looted and damaged Philippine rigid hull inflatable boats used in the mission.

In response, the Philippines issued a diplomatic protest to China, condemning the aggressive actions.

Diplomatic and Military Preparedness

The incident has intensified tensions between the Philippines and China, highlighting the Philippines’ dual approach of military readiness and diplomatic efforts.

The Philippines continues to assert its rights based on the 2016 Hague ruling, which invalidated China’s claims in the South China Sea.

Amid these tensions, the Philippines is strengthening its security partnerships, including revitalizing its alliance with the United States and forming new cooperations with countries like Vietnam, Australia, and Japan.

The goal is to ensure a united front in defending maritime sovereignty and maintaining regional stability.

Upholding National Interests

Gen. Brawner’s statements underline the Philippines’ firm stance on protecting its personnel and interests in the WPS.

While the Armed Forces of the Philippines is prepared to respond with appropriate force, the Philippine government also seeks to balance this with diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation of tensions.

Moving Forward

The Philippines remains committed to defending its territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of its troops.

As the situation in the West Philippine Sea evolves, the Armed Forces of the Philippines’s readiness to respond appropriately and the government’s diplomatic strategies will be crucial in navigating these challenging waters.
