British nationals in Lebanon are being strongly advised to leave immediately as the UK government enhances its support amidst escalating regional tensions. The Foreign Secretary’s urgent call comes with warnings of rapid deterioration and potential conflict.

UK Government’s Call to Action

The UK government has issued a stark warning to British nationals in Lebanon: leave now while commercial options remain available. This urgent advice stems from rising regional tensions and the possibility of conflict escalation.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the gravity of the situation, urging all British nationals to heed the call.

Enhanced Support Measures

To aid those still in Lebanon, the UK has sent officials to the region, including Lebanon, to bolster embassy staff. This move is part of the government’s preparatory planning for various conflict scenarios.

Consular experts are now on the ground to provide strategic support and respond to inquiries, ensuring that British nationals receive the necessary assistance and advice.

Consular and Military Assistance

In addition to consular experts, Border Force officers have been deployed to support consular operations. These officers are ready to assist British nationals in their evacuation efforts.

The potential for exit routes, including roads, to be affected, limited, or closed due to sudden escalations has necessitated this robust response.

Military personnel are also being deployed to provide operational support to embassies. The presence of the Landing Ship RFA Cardigan Bay and HMS Duncan in the eastern Mediterranean highlights the UK’s commitment to supporting its nationals and allies with humanitarian needs.

The Royal Air Force has transport helicopters on standby, ready to assist if required.

Direct Appeal from Foreign Secretary

Foreign Secretary David Lammy has made a direct appeal to British nationals in Lebanon. He stated,

“Tensions are high, and the situation could deteriorate rapidly. While we are working around the clock to strengthen our consular presence in Lebanon, my message to British nationals there is clear – leave now.”

Lammy further stressed that a widening of the conflict would be catastrophic.

“A widening of this conflict is in nobody’s interest – the consequences could be disastrous. That’s why we continue to call for de-escalation and a diplomatic solution.”

Recent Government Visits

The deployment of additional staff to the region follows recent visits by both the Foreign Secretary and Defence Secretary to the Middle East, including Lebanon. During these visits, they emphasized the need for de-escalation and pushed for peace and stability.

These diplomatic efforts underscore the UK’s commitment to resolving tensions through dialogue and reducing the risk of conflict.

Defence Secretary’s Statement

Defence Secretary John Healey reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting British citizens worldwide.

“Our Armed Forces will always step up to support British citizens around the world and reinforce regional stability with their professionalism and bravery.”

Healey also conveyed a message of de-escalation to Middle Eastern leaders.

“As I told leaders in the Middle East this week, de-escalation must be the primary focus in the region. We are urging all parties to reduce tensions. There must be an end to the fighting, an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and a diplomatic path to peace and security.”
