Development Minister Anneliese Dodds embarks on her first official visit to the Middle East, pledging new UK aid for Gaza and meeting key Jordanian ministers. Her trip highlights the UK’s commitment to fostering peace and stability in the region.

Minister Dodds’ Call for Calm

As tensions rise between Israel and Lebanon, Minister Dodds will urge for calm in the wider Middle East. She will continue the diplomatic efforts made by the Foreign and Defence Secretaries in Qatar, Lebanon, and Israel, advocating for renewed peace initiatives.

Additionally, she will reiterate the UK’s call for British nationals to leave Lebanon due to escalating risks.

New Aid for Gaza

Amid growing instability, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza persists. During her visit to Jordan, Minister Dodds will announce a £6 million funding package for UNICEF’s work in Gaza.

This aid aims to support vulnerable families with essential resources such as food, water, health, education, and wellbeing services. The funding will benefit tens of thousands of Gazans, providing crucial support in a time of dire need.

Aid Package Breakdown

Aid Component

Beneficiaries

Food and Water 55,000 people
Health Services Vaccination for 20,000 children
Education and Wellbeing 8,000 school-aged children

Minister Dodds emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and unfettered access to lifesaving aid for Gaza. She also expressed gratitude to the Jordanian government for supporting UK efforts to deliver aid.

Diplomatic Engagements in Jordan

During her visit, Minister Dodds will meet key charity partners, including the World Food Programme, to discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza and Jordan. She will also meet Jordanian Minister of Finance, Mohamad Al Ississ, and the foreign ministry’s Secretary General, Majid Al-Qatarneh.

The discussions will focus on Jordan’s economic performance and ways to boost economic prosperity and resilience against the climate crisis.

Broader Middle East Dynamics

Saudi Arabia-Israel Relations

Efforts to normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel have faced significant challenges. Saudi Arabia insists on a serious commitment to a two-state solution, which has been met with opposition from Israel’s current government.

The situation was further complicated by the Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023.

Syrian Conflict and Regional Impact

The resumption of ties between Syria and Saudi Arabia signals a broader trend of Arab countries normalizing relations with the Assad regime. This could lead to Syria’s reintegration into the Arab League, potentially reducing its international isolation.

Renewed ties may result in increased economic support and investment from Gulf states, helping alleviate Syria’s economic challenges.

Minister Dodds’ visit and the UK’s aid announcement highlight the ongoing efforts to address humanitarian crises and support stability in the Middle East. By reinforcing diplomatic ties and providing vital aid, the UK aims to play a crucial role in fostering peace and security in the region.
