On October 19, 2024, thousands of walkers will gather at the Santa Monica Pier for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walk.

This annual event brings together communities across Los Angeles and the U.S. to advocate for suicide prevention and offer support for those affected by this critical issue.

Walking Together for a Cause

The Out of the Darkness Walk extends beyond mere footsteps; it’s a pivotal movement toward saving lives. Each year, participants from every corner of the nation unite to raise awareness and funds to combat suicide.
Notably, the Santa Monica event, organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) Greater Los Angeles & Central Coast Chapter, is one of nearly 400 walks taking place across the country. This highlights the urgent need for suicide prevention efforts.
Moreover, the walk connects people affected by suicide, fostering solidarity and healing. Many attendees have personal experiences with suicide, and the event provides a supportive community.
Ultimately, attendees walk together, raise funds, and support AFSP’s mission to reduce suicide rates through research, education, and policy advocacy. By participating, they contribute to a broader movement promoting mental health awareness and saving lives.

Event Details: When, Where, and How

  • Location: Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA
  • Date and Time: October 19, 2024, with check-in and activities beginning at 9:00 a.m., and the walk starting at 10:00 a.m.
  • Registration: Participants can register online at AFSP’s official event page. Donations for the walk are accepted until December 31, 2024.

The Santa Monica walk spans 2.4 miles along the picturesque coastline. Participants will enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean while walking alongside hundreds of others who are passionate about raising awareness for suicide prevention.

The event will feature guest speakers, such as Niyc Pidgeon and Tammie Frank, as well as musical performances by DJ Scott Kirkland from The Crystal Method, JRae, and Jensen Gering.

Why This Walk Matters

In the U.S., suicide affects one in five families. The Out of the Darkness Walk offers a powerful platform for individuals to come together and address this issue head-on.

AFSP CEO Robert Gebbia emphasizes the importance of collective action:

“By walking, you are helping AFSP make progress in prevention through research, advocacy, education, and support to those affected by suicide.”

Last year, the Santa Monica walk alone raised over $168,000 with more than 1,100 participants. Nationally, these events have raised over $21 million, demonstrating the widespread commitment to this cause.

The funds directly support AFSP’s programs, which focus on suicide prevention education, public policy advocacy, and providing resources for those impacted by suicide.

Sponsors and Community Involvement

Local businesses and organizations are essential in making the Santa Monica walk a success. This year’s sponsors include:

  • Crowe, Providence, and Ocean View Adult Psychiatric Hospital: Major healthcare providers joining forces to emphasize mental health.
  • Colourpop, Shake Shack, and Find Your Anchor: Brands supporting community outreach and awareness efforts.

In addition to the walk, there will be a Community Partners Resource Fair, which connects attendees with local mental health resources and organizations.
