In the wake of Severe Tropical Storm “Kristine,” communities across the Philippines are relying on the swift action of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to restore access and safety.

A Rapid Response to Crisis

Following the devastating impact of Severe Tropical Storm “Kristine,” the DPWH has intensified its operations to ensure that critical infrastructure is restored. This proactive response is crucial for the affected areas, highlighting the department’s commitment to public safety and accessibility.

As of October 26, 2024, DPWH has deployed 9,005 personnel and 2,048 units of heavy equipment through its Quick Response Assets (QRA).

These teams, drawn from various Regional and District Engineering Offices, are working diligently to clear debris and conduct immediate road repairs.

Current Status of Road Conditions

The storm has wreaked havoc across the nation, affecting a total of 93 road sections. Fortunately, DPWH has successfully reopened 68 sections, but 25 sections remain impassable due to severe weather conditions such as flooding, landslides, and collapsed bridges.

Here’s a brief overview of the current road closures by region:

  • Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR): 4 sections closed due to soil collapse and landslides.
  • Region II: 2 sections closed because of flooding.
  • Region IV-A: 5 sections closed due to road and bridge collapses, with 7 additional sections facing limited access.
  • Region IV-B: 1 section closed from landslides.
  • Region V: 12 sections closed due to flooding and road collapses, with 10 sections having limited access.
  • Region VII: 1 section closed due to a road slip.

To ensure safety, DPWH has strategically placed warning signs along these roads with limited access, helping motorists navigate safely.

A Commitment to Recovery

“Our teams are working around the clock to restore safe and accessible roadways,”

said DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan.

“These roads are vital lifelines for communities impacted by the storm. By restoring access, we facilitate the efficient delivery of relief supplies and medical assistance, supporting efforts to rebuild and recover from this crisis.”

A Holistic Approach to Disaster Management

In addition to road clearing operations, DPWH is focusing on cleaning and declogging drainage systems to prevent further flooding.

This comprehensive approach not only aims to restore infrastructure but also supports communities in their overall recovery efforts.

In Conclusion

As DPWH continues its intensive operations, the department’s swift actions are vital for rebuilding communities affected by Severe Tropical Storm “Kristine.”

By prioritizing infrastructure restoration and safety, DPWH plays an essential role in ensuring that citizens can return to their normal lives as soon as possible.
