The British Army successfully conducted its first live firing of the next-generation Archer Mobile Howitzer in Finland, marking a significant step in NATO’s largest artillery exercise to date. Introduction

The British Army demonstrated the Archer Mobile Howitzer during Exercise Dynamic Front 25, held in Finland from 4–24 November 2024. This large-scale NATO artillery exercise involved 28 nations, reinforcing collective defence capabilities. The event also marked Finland’s first major military exercise since joining NATO in 2023.

Exercise Dynamic Front 25 is NATO’s largest artillery event, spanning five countries and engaging 5,000 soldiers, including 350 from the British Army. Finland’s debut as a NATO exercise host underscores its growing importance in European defence.

  • Scope: Testing interoperability of artillery systems in Arctic conditions.

  • Firing Rate: Eight rounds per minute.
  • Range: Effective at up to 50km.
  • Automation: Fully automated for faster response times.

Alongside the Archer system, the UK showcased:

  • TAIPAN radar: Advanced enemy artillery detection.
  • Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS): Capable of firing 12 rockets in under a minute.
