As Christmas approaches, balancing festive expenses with financial obligations can feel daunting. HMRC is reminding Self Assessment taxpayers of their Time to Pay arrangement, which offers a flexible way to spread tax bill payments over manageable monthly installments.

This initiative aims to support taxpayers during the festive season while ensuring they meet their financial commitments.

Understanding the Time to Pay Arrangement

Self Assessment taxpayers with a 2023–2024 tax bill due on 31 January 2025 can use HMRC’s Time to Pay option to set up a payment plan. Designed for individuals owing up to £30,000, this arrangement allows payments to be made monthly over 12 months.

Features of Time to Pay:

  • Eligibility: Taxpayers owing £30,000 or less can set up a plan online without contacting HMRC.
  • Flexibility: Payments are tailored to individual financial circumstances.
  • Accessibility: No need to wait—plans can be arranged quickly via the HMRC website.

For those owing more than £30,000 or needing longer terms, HMRC provides additional support through direct contact.

Benefits of Spreading Payments

The Time to Pay system offers multiple advantages:

  • Avoid Penalties: Setting up a plan prevents late payment penalties.
  • Ease Financial Pressure: Manageable monthly payments reduce the burden of a lump sum.
  • Online Convenience: Applications can be made anytime via HMRC’s secure online platform.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, says:

“Customers can set up their online payment plan to suit their own financial circumstances, spreading payments across a maximum of 12 months.”

Deadlines and Steps to Take

To take advantage of this option, taxpayers must file their 2023–2024 tax return before applying for a Time to Pay plan. The deadline to file and pay is 31 January 2025. Missing this date risks penalties and additional interest on unpaid amounts.

Steps to Set Up a Plan:

  1. Log into your Self Assessment account on GOV.UK.
  2. Check eligibility for Time to Pay.
  3. Select a payment plan that fits your budget.
  4. Submit the request online.

Tips for Staying on Track

To avoid disruptions:

  • Budget for regular monthly payments.
  • Keep contact details up-to-date with HMRC.
  • Use HMRC’s free app to track payments and receive reminders.

Additionally, taxpayers should remain vigilant against tax scams. Always verify communications by searching “HMRC tax scams” on GOV.UK to ensure authenticity.

Beyond Self Assessment

HMRC’s resources extend to those selling goods or providing services online, helping them determine if they need to file a tax return. For individuals unsure about their tax obligations, GOV.UK offers comprehensive guides to clarify requirements.

A Helping Hand for Taxpayers

HMRC’s Time to Pay arrangement exemplifies the government’s commitment to providing flexible solutions for financial challenges.

Whether you’re a first-time Self Assessment filer or managing complex finances, the option to spread tax payments ensures you can meet your obligations without unnecessary strain.
