CBP Officers Foil Smuggling Attempt, Arrest Ecuadoran Fugitive

Douglas, AZ – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Port of Douglas intercepted an attempted alien smuggling operation, arresting a 28-year-old Ecuadoran national with an active extradition warrant from New York.

The incident, which involved a 16-year-old U.S. citizen driver, highlights CBP’s vigilance in securing the border and enforcing immigration laws.

Smuggling Attempt Uncovered at the Border

On February 11, 2025, at approximately 5:12 p.m., a 16-year-old male U.S. citizen arrived at the Douglas Port of Entry, driving a Toyota Tacoma with an adult passenger. During the primary inspection, the passenger presented an Arizona State Identification card and claimed U.S. citizenship.

CBP officers quickly identified inconsistencies and referred the vehicle for secondary inspection. Upon further questioning, the minor stated that the passenger was his friend. However, officers determined there was no relation between the two individuals.

CBP’s Investigation Reveals a Fugitive

  • The ID card, though legitimate, did not belong to the passenger.
  • A systems check identified the man as a 28-year-old Ecuadoran national wanted in New York for a fatal hit-and-run.

Following verification, CBP arrested the minor while the Ecuadoran national was transferred to the Douglas Police Department for extradition processing at Cochise County Jail.

CBP’s Role in Border Security

CBP officers are responsible for screening all individuals and vehicles entering the U.S., ensuring national security while facilitating legal travel and trade. Their duties also include:

Border Security Responsibilities Description
Anti-Terrorism Enforcement Prevents threats from entering the U.S.
Immigration Law Enforcement Identifies and stops unauthorized entries
Criminal Background Checks Detects individuals with outstanding warrants
Trade and Agriculture Protection Ensures compliance with trade laws and food safety

CBP Statement on the Arrest

Martin Gomez, Area Port Director for Douglas, reaffirmed CBP’s commitment to public safety:

“We remain committed to upholding our nation’s immigration laws and the safety of the American public.”

CBP officers’ diligence and expertise were instrumental in preventing a wanted fugitive from illegally entering the U.S.

Legal Process and Next Steps

The minor remains in custody, pending further legal proceedings. The Ecuadoran fugitive awaits extradition to New York, where he will face criminal charges related to the hit-and-run case.

Under federal law, charges are filed by complaint, meaning an individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

In Conclusion

This case highlights CBP’s crucial role in border security and law enforcement. Through careful inspections and thorough background checks, officers prevented an unauthorized entry and facilitated the apprehension of a fugitive.
