Experience Japanese Culture at the Library of Congress

On April 5, 2025, the Library of Congress will host its annual Japanese Culture Day as part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

This free, family-friendly event at the Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C., offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Japanese traditions, arts, and storytelling while celebrating the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan.

 

Event Highlights

Attendees can enjoy a day filled with engaging performances, interactive workshops, and cultural exhibits. Whether you’re interested in traditional arts and crafts or immersive musical experiences, there is something for everyone.

  • Date: Saturday, April 5, 2025
  • Time: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Location: Thomas Jefferson Building, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
  • Admission: Free (Tickets available 30 days in advance)

Performances

  • Japanese storytelling – 10:30 AM & 1:00 PM
  • Okinawan shamisen musical performance by Kyoko Asato – 11:00 AM & 1:30 PM

Interactive Workshops

  • Origami creation – Fold intricate paper figures.
  • Calligraphy demonstrations – Learn traditional Japanese writing techniques.
  • Paper cherry blossom crafting – Create beautiful floral designs.
  • Kimono try-on experience – Wear an authentic Japanese kimono.
  • Tanabata wish writing – Participate in this traditional star festival practice.

 

Cultural Significance and Historical Ties

The Library of Congress Japanese Culture Day is an extension of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which commemorates Japan’s 1912 gift of 3,020 cherry trees to the United States.

This annual event fosters cultural exchange and deeper understanding, strengthening ties between the two nations.
