The U.S. Space Force, established in December 2019, is focused on achieving space superiority through strategic advancements and overcoming challenges like budget constraints to ensure national security and economic stability amid growing global competition.
Mission and Strategic Goals
The U.S. Space Force’s primary mission is to maintain control over the space domain. This involves ensuring space superiority through both kinetic and non-kinetic means to affect adversary capabilities. The focus is on contesting and controlling the space domain to assure freedom of action for U.S. forces.
Gen. Chance Saltzman, Chief of Space Operations, emphasizes the importance of embracing their role as space warfighters with a fundamental responsibility for space control. This strategic direction aims to protect national interests by denying adversaries similar freedoms in space.
“Domain control is the special province of warfighters, a unique responsibility that only military services hold,” he said.
“It is the thing that distinguishes the Navy from the merchant marine and the Air Force from Southwest Airlines. It is the purpose of the Space Force to achieve space superiority.”
“Put simply, space control encapsulates the mission areas required to contest, to control the space domain, employing kinetic and non-kinetic means to affect adversary capabilities by disruption and degradation, even destruction, if necessary,”
Enhancing Capabilities
The Space Force is actively working to enhance its capabilities by establishing new commands and accelerating technological advancements such as the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture.
These efforts are crucial for maintaining a competitive edge in the increasingly contested space environment.
Despite these advancements, the force faces significant challenges, including budget constraints that may impact its ability to fully realize its strategic goals.
Additionally, there is a pressing need for advanced training tools to prepare personnel effectively for their roles in this evolving domain.
Operational Realities
“We know space superiority is an end goal [and] it’s the headquarters’ job to provide the means to achieve it, to create the environment, set the conditions for victory, but it’s the job of the warfighters in the field to define the way to connect the two,” Saltzman said.
He added that the Space Force doesn’t yet have all the best training tools available to those who need them. The service is still in the process of acquiring all the simulators and training capabilities it needs.
“So, we have a disconnect between the plan and the operational reality, between the end and our means,” he said. “That’s where I need your help. I would love to wave a wand and give every crew [an] advanced virtual reality trainer that incorporates the latest and greatest threat data, but I can’t. So, does that mean the solution is to shrug, mark it red, and move on? Absolutely not.”
Global Competition
The establishment of the U.S. Space Force reflects growing concerns about global competition in space, particularly with advancements made by Russia and China.
This geopolitical context underscores the critical nature of achieving space superiority for both national security and economic interests.
