The IRS has issued a reminder to U.S. citizens and resident aliens living abroad: the deadline to file federal tax returns for the 2024 tax year is Monday, June 16, 2025.

While an automatic two-month extension applies to eligible expats, interest on unpaid taxes begins accruing after April 15, 2025.

Who Needs to File?

Expats must file if they meet the standard income thresholds, just like domestic filers. The June 16 extension applies if:

  • You live outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and your main place of business is also outside these locations.
  • You serve in the military or naval forces outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

A statement must be attached to the tax return confirming eligibility.

Tax Filing Extensions

For those unable to file by June 16, the IRS allows an extension until October 15, 2025. However, this is only an extension to file—not to pay taxes owed. To request an extension:

  • Online: Use IRS Free File or other electronic options.
  • By Mail: Submit Form 4868 before June 16.
  • Through Payment: Pay your estimated taxes online and select the extension request option.

Special Considerations for Expats

Foreign Earned Income Exclusion & Foreign Tax Credit

Many expats qualify for tax benefits like the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) and the Foreign Tax Credit (FTC). These benefits help avoid double taxation but require a tax return to be filed.

Foreign Account Reporting Requirements

Expats with foreign financial accounts may need to report them to the U.S. government:

  • FinCEN Form 114 (FBAR): Required if the aggregate value of foreign accounts exceeds $10,000 at any time in 2024.
  • IRS Form 8938: Required for specified foreign financial assets exceeding certain thresholds.

Failure to comply may result in significant penalties.

Interest and Penalties on Late Payments

Even with an automatic extension to file, unpaid taxes from 2024 will accrue 7% annual interest, compounded daily, starting April 16, 2025.

Important Deadlines for U.S. Expats

Deadline Requirement
April 15, 2025 Standard tax deadline; interest on unpaid taxes begins
June 16, 2025 Extended deadline for U.S. citizens abroad
October 15, 2025 Final extended deadline for those who request it

Military Personnel and Special Cases

Combat Zone Extensions

Military members serving in combat zones receive an automatic extension of at least 180 days beyond their service period to file and pay taxes.

Israel, Gaza, and West Bank Tax Relief

Expats affected by the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks in Israel have until September 30, 2025, to file and pay taxes.

How to Pay Taxes from Abroad

To avoid delays, expats should use electronic payment methods such as:

  • IRS Direct Pay (via bank account)
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
  • Credit/Debit card or digital wallets (fees apply)

To Sum Up

U.S. taxpayers abroad must stay compliant with IRS tax filing and payment rules. Filing by June 16, 2025, ensures access to tax benefits and avoids penalties.
