In Spring 2025, the Defense Health Agency (DHA) announced that 16 U.S. military hospitals received an “A” rating from the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, highlighting their commitment to patient safety and quality care.

This achievement reflects DHA’s dedication to transparency and excellence in healthcare for service members and their families.

Military Medical Excellence

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) has proudly announced that 16 U.S. military hospitals have earned an “A” rating in the Spring 2025 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.

This recognition underscores the high standards of patient safety and quality care maintained by these facilities, which are crucial for service members and their families.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national organization, evaluates hospitals based on up to 22 evidence-based patient safety measures.

These include errors, injuries, and infections.

Among eligible military hospitals participating in this assessment, a remarkable 73% received the highest grade, significantly surpassing the national average of 32%.

Commitment to Continued Excellence

This achievement highlights DHA’s ongoing efforts to integrate external safety evaluations into its quality assurance programs.

Dr. Paul Cordts, DHA’s deputy assistant director for medical affairs and chief medical officer, emphasized that these grades validate DHA’s commitment to meeting high standards for patients they serve.

“These most recent Leapfrog Safety Grades continue to validate DHA’s commitment to meeting high standards for the patients we are privileged to serve,”

Strategic Implications

  • Ensuring top-tier medical care enhances military readiness and resilience.
  • The U.S. military demonstrates leadership in adopting rigorous safety standards.
  • Transparent reporting may improve trust among service members and families.
  • Positive grades could justify increased funding for military medical facilities.
  • High-quality care supports U.S. humanitarian missions globally.

Diverse Stakeholders

The announcement involves several key stakeholders including the Defense Health Agency (DHA), The Leapfrog Group, Dr. Paul Cordts as a spokesperson on quality and safety matters, as well as U.S. service members and their families who benefit directly from these healthcare services.
