The City of Tucson is set to embark on a transformative pedestrian safety and walkability project along Sixth Street and Fifth Street, starting June 2, 2025.

This initiative aims to enhance daily safety and accessibility for pedestrians by upgrading sidewalks, crossings, lighting, and adding shade trees.

However, the construction will temporarily reduce traffic lanes, potentially affecting local commutes.

Enhancing Pedestrian Safety in Tucson

The City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) is launching a significant improvement project along Sixth Street from Campbell Avenue to Country Club Road.

This effort is part of the Prop 407 Tucson Delivers Strong Connections initiative aimed at boosting pedestrian safety and walkability.

Crews will work from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., reducing travel to one lane in each direction for about six months.

The project includes ADA-compliant ramps, complete sidewalks on both sides of the road, enhanced street crossings, street lighting, green storm infrastructure, and landscaping for shade.

What This Means for Tucson Residents

  • Improved pedestrian safety with new ADA-compliant ramps and connected sidewalks
  • Enhanced street environment with better lighting and shaded areas
  • Temporary traffic disruptions due to lane reductions during construction hours
  • Potential increase in foot traffic benefiting local businesses post-construction

Prop 407 Parks + Connections Bond

This project is part of the broader Proposition 407 Parks + Connections Bond approved by voters in 2018.

The bond allocates $225 million over nine years to improve parks, pedestrian pathways, bicycle lanes, and safety connections citywide.

By aligning with ongoing efforts to enhance active transportation and green infrastructure in Tucson, this initiative reflects a commitment to creating safer walking environments.

Tensions Amid Progress: Addressing Concerns During Construction

Residents may worry about traffic delays during construction as travel reduces to one lane each way from early morning until early afternoon.

The city emphasizes phased work schedules designed specifically around minimizing disruption while ensuring crew safety throughout this period.

Additionally coordinated efforts between concurrent waterline replacement projects alongside roadway reconstruction plans aim at addressing potential concerns regarding coordination issues effectively.

The Bottom Line

As Tucson continues its journey toward becoming more pedestrian-friendly through initiatives like these under Prop407 bonds’ umbrella vision.

It remains crucially important not only focus upon immediate impacts but also consider long-term implications such developments hold within broader community context.
