Five UK projects have been awarded over £2.5 million by the UK Space Agency and ESA’s InCubed2 programme to leverage satellite data for enhancing public services.

These projects include infrastructure safety, biodiversity tracking, methane emission detection, and sustainable farming support.

Satellite Technology Transforming Public Services

The recent funding announcement highlights the UK government’s commitment to utilizing space technology for practical benefits on Earth.

By integrating satellite data into public services, professionals in agriculture, environmental management, and infrastructure can access advanced analytics to enhance safety and sustainability.

This initiative promises significant improvements in efficiency and compliance with government schemes.

Practical Applications of Satellite Data

  • Farmers can identify wildlife on their land using satellite data, facilitating access to government support schemes like the Sustainable Farming Incentive.
  • Advanced radar and AI technology will monitor structural safety of buildings and bridges remotely.
  • Methane emissions from industrial sites will be tracked in near real-time to support the UK’s net-zero 2050 goal.
  • Biodiversity tracking using Earth Observation data will assist landowners in meeting biodiversity net gain requirements.

Impact on Communities Across the UK

This initiative is set to benefit various stakeholders by providing safer infrastructure, better environmental protection, and more informed farming practices.

Farmers will have precise biodiversity data to qualify for subsidies while communities enjoy safer bridges monitored remotely.

Additionally, tracking methane emissions supports cleaner air and climate goals, indirectly improving public health.

Industry Leaders’ Perspectives

Harshbir Sangha, Director of Missions and Capabilities at the UK Space Agency, said:

“By bringing together innovative space companies with public sector partners, we’re demonstrating that space technology delivers practical benefits here on Earth. From monitoring biodiversity to ensuring infrastructure safety, these initiatives show how satellite data can drive efficiency, sustainability and better decision-making.

This investment reflects our commitment to establishing the UK as a global leader in space-enabled public services, creating a blueprint for how space technology can address some of our most pressing societal challenges.”

UKspace Executive Director, Colin Baldwin, said:

“This investment into the application of satellite data into downstream services covering infrastructure, biodiversity, agriculture, methane emissions and sustainability is very welcome.

For some time, we have been working with our members and through our committees to highlight how the space industry can bring immense value to the public sector, so we are very encouraged to see the Government recognising the opportunity.

Several UKspace member companies are benefiting from this programme and we look forward to seeing their ideas being adopted into new and improved operational services.”
