The UK government has approved a £1,500 discount on the first four Citroën electric vehicle models under the new Electric Car Grant scheme starting August 2025.

This initiative aims to make EVs more affordable and accessible, supporting the government’s broader investment in expanding EV infrastructure and industry growth.

Driving Change: The New Electric Car Grant

The UK government’s recent approval of a £1,500 discount for Citroën’s electric vehicles marks a significant step towards making electric cars more accessible.

Starting in August 2025, this initiative is part of a larger £650 million Electric Car Grant scheme designed to reduce upfront costs for consumers and encourage the transition from petrol or diesel vehicles.

Benefits for Consumers

  • Automatic £1,500 discount at purchase with no extra paperwork required
  • Potential savings of up to £1,500 annually on fuel and running costs
  • Simplified buying process with discounts applied at point of sale
  • Increased accessibility to EVs for both individual buyers and businesses with fleets
  • Support for vehicles meeting high manufacturing sustainability standards

The Growing EV Infrastructure in the UK

The expansion of the UK’s public EV charging network is crucial to supporting this transition. Over the past year, there has been a 27% increase in chargepoints, bringing the total to over 82,000 nationwide.

With plans to add another 100,000 chargepoints soon, drivers can expect improved access across urban and rural areas alike.

Quotes from Industry Leaders

Heidi Alexander, Transport Secretary at the UK Government said,

“With the first four models approved today and more to come over the next few weeks. This summer we’re making owning an electric car cheaper, easier and a reality for thousands more people across the UK.”

Greg Taylor, Managing Director, Citroën UK

“We welcome the support of the Electric Car Grant and are delighted to be the first to have our electric range, including the New ë-C3, New ë-C4, New ë -C5 Aircross and ë-Berlingo, approved and eligible.

At Citroën we want everyone to have the opportunity to make the switch to an electric car and this support will help make our cars more accessible for our customers.”

RAC Head of Policy, Simon Williams said:

“It’s great to see the first qualifying models announced for the government’s new Electric Car Grant. Not only does this mean more drivers will benefit from the lower cost of running an electric vehicle, but it’s hopefully the sign of more to come from other manufacturers in the weeks ahead.

With nearly 1.6 million battery electric vehicles on the road already, it’s a real boost for the switch to electric.”

A Broader Commitment to Sustainability

This grant complements previous efforts like the Plug-in Car Grant launched in 2011 and aligns with policies such as the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate.

These initiatives reflect a sustained commitment by the UK government towards phasing out petrol and diesel cars by 2030 while promoting greener production practices within automotive manufacturing.
