Monday night’s fire at Tucson House on North Oracle Road, a major public housing complex, displaced 14 residents but resulted in no injuries thanks to the swift response of the Tucson Fire Department.

The incident underscores ongoing safety and emergency preparedness efforts as the complex undergoes significant renovations.

What Happened

The Tucson Fire Department (TFD) was quick to respond to a fire that broke out on a 13th-floor balcony at Tucson House, located at 1501 N. Oracle Rd., shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday night.

Their rapid action prevented the blaze from spreading beyond one unit, ensuring that no residents were injured. While some individuals were evaluated for respiratory issues, none required hospitalization.

Tucson House staff from the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), along with Red Cross personnel, promptly assisted residents with evacuation and communication efforts.

Fourteen residents were temporarily displaced, finding refuge in hotels or with family members. As of Tuesday morning, nine had returned home while five awaited clearance for smoke or water damage.

The fire’s cause remains undetermined; however, the building’s sprinkler system functioned effectively, containing most damage to a single unit. HCD anticipates no structural damage but has scheduled an inspection by a structural engineer to ensure safety.

Tucson House: A Community Cornerstone

Tucson House is not just any building; it’s the city’s largest public housing complex with over 400 apartments spread across 16 floors.

This incident comes as it prepares for a multi-year renovation funded partly by a $50 million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation grant awarded by HUD two years ago.

The transition from traditional public housing to a voucher-based system underlines Tucson’s commitment to modernizing its housing infrastructure since acquiring the property in 1979.

What This Means for Local Residents

  • Quick response ensured no injuries among residents
  • Temporary displacement affected 14 individuals
  • Most residents returned home within days
  • Ongoing renovations promise long-term improvements
