The British High Commission in Malé has donated First Aid Training equipment to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) on 10 August 2025, enhancing emergency response capabilities at the Maldives’ main gateway.

This initiative is part of the UK government’s Protective Security & Attack Response Program (PSARP), aimed at improving emergency preparedness and protecting both British tourists and the wider public.

Strengthening UK-Maldives Security Partnership

The donation of first aid training equipment significantly enhances the ability of frontline staff at Maldives airports to provide lifesaving assistance during emergencies.

This directly impacts the safety of both British tourists and local residents, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to safeguarding its nationals abroad.

The initiative builds on existing security collaborations between the UK and Maldives, such as joint emergency response exercises like ‘Amaan Asseyri’ held in May 2025.

Benefits for Travelers

  • Improved emergency response capabilities at key travel hubs
  • Increased confidence for families planning holidays in the Maldives
  • Enhanced safety measures potentially reducing travel disruptions
  • Support for tourism-dependent economies through increased visitor confidence

UK’s Strategic Role in Indo-Pacific Security

This initiative aligns with the goals of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to enhance security in strategically important regions like the Indo-Pacific.

By supporting MACL with vital first aid training equipment, the UK not only prioritizes public safety but also strengthens its geopolitical influence by contributing to regional stability.

Such efforts are likely viewed positively by international partners as a demonstration of proactive engagement in regional security.

Dignitaries Perspectives

Acting British High Commissioner to the Maldives Toff Wahab said:

“This donation demonstrates our commitment to working with Maldivian partners to enhance public safety and emergency response capabilities. By supporting MACL with this vital first aid training equipment, we’re helping to ensure that frontline staff have the tools they need to save lives in emergency situations.

The UK places the highest priority on the safety of British nationals abroad, and this initiative helps protect the significant number of British tourists who travel to the Maldives each year. It also reflects our excellent relationship with MACL, who have shown great commitment to improving their emergency response capabilities.”

Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, CEO and Managing Director of MACL, emphasized:

“Ensuring our staff are well-trained and prepared remains a top priority, and this donation directly supports that mission. We value our close partnership with the British High Commission and appreciate their continued support.”
