Twelve British seafarers have been recognised with the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service 2025. Among them is Captain Chris Phillips of Pembrokeshire, who saved 89 lives at sea.

This year’s awards also celebrate polar explorer Captain Philippa Bowden and lifelong community servant Captain Iain MacKenzie.

Captain Chris Phillips’ Heroic Rescue

Captain Chris Phillips, 56, from Pembrokeshire, has been honoured for leading a daring winter rescue mission in 2024 that saved 89 people, including women, children, and a baby.

Commanding a 30-person crew, his decisive leadership turned what could have been a maritime tragedy into a story of survival.

Born into a proud seafaring family, Captain Phillips joined the Merchant Navy at 16, inspired by his father and grandfather. Over the decades, he has travelled the world, rising to the highest grade of UK seafarer certification.

His career has also been marked by civic recognition, including the Freedom of the City of London in 2024.

Captain Philippa Bowden: Breaking Barriers in Polar Seas

At just 36, Captain Philippa Bowden from Portsmouth has become the UK’s only female unlimited ice captain.

Her achievements include piloting the largest cruise ship to operate in Antarctic waters, carrying over 2,400 passengers through the Ross and Weddell Seas.

An Antarctic Ambassador since 2023, Captain Bowden is a vocal advocate for environmental protection. Her work includes reporting whale sightings and cloud data, earning an award from the UK Meteorological Office.

Beyond her voyages, she shares her experiences through public speaking and mentoring young women considering maritime careers.

Captain Iain MacKenzie: A Lifeline for Remote Communities

Captain Iain MacKenzie, 60, from the Isle of Skye, has dedicated more than 32 years to operating CalMac’s ferry services to the Small Isles. As Master of the MV Loch Nevis, he has ensured lifeline connections for residents, delivering vital supplies and medical access under challenging weather conditions.

In addition to his professional service, MacKenzie has volunteered for over 25 years with the RNLI, responding to emergencies at sea. His work reflects the enduring values of community, resilience, and duty that underpin the Merchant Navy.

Wider Recognition and National Pride

Maritime Minister Mike Kane praised this year’s recipients, highlighting their bravery, service, and vital contributions to national security and trade.

Stuart Rivers, CEO of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, described the medal winners as embodying

“the very best of our maritime community.”

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the medal and its 10th year within the UK Honours system. The Merchant Navy, established in 1835, continues to play a crucial role in supporting trade, tourism, and safety at sea.
