San Jose is making electric vehicles more affordable than ever. As federal credits wrap up this month, the launch of San Jose EV rebates gives households and small businesses a time-sensitive chance to save more than $23,000 on a cleaner commute.

San José Clean Energy (SJCE) announced on September 9, 2025, that qualifying residents can access $4,000 off new EVs or $2,000 off used EVs. Because these stack with federal credits that expire September 30, San Jose EV rebates make September the most cost-effective time to switch.

How San Jose EV Rebates Work

The programme lowers barriers for income-qualified households and SJCE customers. Starting October 1, eligibility expands to residents earning under 100% of Area Median Income (AMI), widening access to San Jose EV rebates and bringing cleaner air benefits to more neighbourhoods.

  • $4,000 off new EVs and $2,000 off used EVs at participating dealers.
  • Federal incentives: $7,500 for new EVs and $4,000 for used EVs.
  • Income-qualified families can combine offers to exceed $23,000 in savings.

Why This Matters for Households

Residents gain lower running costs, reduced maintenance, and quieter streets. With San Jose EV rebates targeted to income-qualified customers, families that previously couldn’t afford an EV can finally make the switch.

Community Benefits and Business Momentum

City leaders emphasise both economic and health impacts.

“Every San Joséan deserves the chance to be part of the clean energy future,” said Mayor Matt Mahan.

“By stacking local, state, and federal incentives, these rebates put thousands of dollars back in people’s pockets while helping us build a cleaner, healthier city.”

Lori Mitchell, Director of San José Clean Energy, added:

“Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in San José. By making electric vehicles more affordable, we’re giving families the chance to save money while helping reduce climate pollution.”

What Local Businesses Can Expect

Dealers anticipate stronger EV demand. Charging installers and retrofit firms see expanding pipelines. For retail and hospitality, cleaner air and visible charging amenities attract sustainability-minded customers—another ripple effect of San Jose EV rebates.

Savings Snapshot for September

Savings Summary for September Rebates
Incentive Category Savings Available
SJCE New EV Rebate $4,000
SJCE Used EV Rebate $2,000
Federal Tax Credit (new) $7,500
Federal Tax Credit (used) $4,000
Ride & Drive Clean Discounts Up to $5,500
Total (income-qualified) Over $23,000
  • Vehicle price cap: under $60,000; battery electric only.
  • Must be an SJCE customer; participating dealers required.

Equity, Access, and Public Health

By targeting eligibility and expanding AMI coverage, San Jose EV rebates accelerate adoption in communities that experience higher pollution burdens. Cleaner vehicles cut tailpipe emissions, supporting health outcomes across Santa Clara County.

What’s Next for San Jose?

Expect steady growth in charging infrastructure, from curbside pilots to workplace hubs. As municipal fleet transitions continue, San Jose EV rebates will complement utility upgrades and private-sector investments—positioning the city to lead the Bay Area’s clean mobility wave.
