The City of Phoenix is taking strides to improve its local parks with the newly launched Neighborhood Parks Enhancement Program.
This exciting initiative, funded by the General Obligation (GO) Bond Program, dedicates $1.5 million for minor capital improvements across the city’s parks. The city will distribute funds to each council district, promoting equitable investment across Phoenix.
According to Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, the program represents more than just funding.
“It’s about fostering community engagement to match the most appropriate park improvements to the needs of individual neighborhoods.”
How to Get Involved
Eligible neighborhood organizations can submit project proposals to enhance their local parks. These proposals must be for capital improvements, such as new amenities or renovations, rather than routine maintenance.
The application window runs from September 27 to November 8, 2024, and only registered neighborhood organizations can participate. If a group isn’t registered, they can sign up through the Neighborhood Services Department.
Some examples of eligible projects include:
- Resurfacing volleyball or basketball courts
- Adding ramadas for shaded seating
- Installing concrete ping pong tables or outdoor exercise equipment
- Upgrading bike racks or other park features
With a variety of possible improvements, this program allows residents to request upgrades that fit their specific needs.
A Timeline for Park Improvements
Projects selected for funding will be announced in early 2025, with all improvements completed between 2024 and 2029. This structured timeline ensures that residents can enjoy the enhancements without long delays.
Cynthia Aguilar, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, noted,
“We are excited to launch this program and provide resources for our neighborhoods to enhance their parks. We look forward to seeing innovative proposals that will improve parks and bring communities together.”
Investment by District
Here’s how we’re allocating funds across the city, broken down by council district:
Council District |
Funding Allocation |
---|---|
District 1 | $200,000 |
District 2 | $200,000 |
District 3 | $200,000 |
District 4 | $200,000 |
District 5 | $200,000 |
District 6 | $200,000 |
District 7 | $200,000 |
District 8 | $200,000 |
Each district will have the opportunity to utilize its share of the funds to address local priorities, ensuring that parks in all areas of the city benefit from the program.
Strengthening Community Connections
The Neighborhood Parks Enhancement Program goes beyond upgrading public spaces. It empowers Phoenix residents to have a direct say in the changes they want to see in their parks.
From adding new playgrounds to installing shaded ramadas, this initiative helps build a stronger sense of community while improving recreational opportunities for all.
By investing in local parks, Phoenix continues to prioritize the well-being of its neighborhoods, ensuring that green spaces remain safe, vibrant, and accessible for years to come.
