The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reported a dramatic 200% increase in applications to join the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) from January 20 to May 1, 2025, with over 22,000 applicants compared to just 7,000 during the same period in 2024.

This surge follows policy changes under President Trump and Secretary Noem that ended diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)-based hiring practices.

The Secret Service Hits Popularity Spike

Significant policy shifts under President Donald Trump and DHS Secretary Noem have driven the recent surge in applications for the U.S. Secret Service.

These changes include ending DEI-based hiring practices within the Secret Service and broader Department of Homeland Security. The focus has shifted towards merit-based hiring and promotions, aiming to enhance operational readiness.

According to a DHS spokesperson,

For four years, the previous administration demoralized and denied resources to our brave men and women in law enforcement, including in the Secret Service.

This statement highlights the perceived neglect faced by law enforcement agencies under prior policies. The current administration emphasizes reinvigorating these agencies by restoring resources.

Strategic Shifts in Law Enforcement

  • The shift away from DEI-based hiring aims to prioritize meritocracy within federal law enforcement agencies.
  • This change is expected to improve national security by enhancing personnel quality and readiness.
  • The policy reversal may impact workforce composition and morale within federal agencies.
  • Increased public interest in federal law enforcement careers could influence future recruitment strategies.

If you are interested in joining the Secret Service, you can go to https://www.secretservice.gov/careers to apply online.

There is no specific height restriction for Secret Service applicants.

However, candidates must meet certain physical requirements, including:

  • Physical Fitness Test Components:
  • Running
  • Push-ups
  • Sit-ups
  • Flexibility exercises
Secret Service agents need to be in excellent health and physical condition to perform their duties effectively. The physical fitness test assesses their ability to respond quickly and efficiently in various situations.
  • Other Requirements:
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be between 21 and 37 years old (with some exceptions for veterans)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Meet specific vision and hearing standards
  • Pass a thorough background check and security clearance process
It’s essential to review the official Secret Service website or consult with a recruiter for the most up-to-date information on requirements and qualifications.

2024 7,000 –
2025 22,000+ 200%

A Focus on Core Missions

  • The DHS aims to refocus on its core mission of protecting key officials without political distractions.
  • This strategic emphasis aligns with evolving domestic and international security challenges.
  • The policy changes are seen as a response to previous administrative practices that were viewed as distractions.
  • DHS leadership believes these changes will strengthen agency effectiveness and public trust.

Parting Shot

The recent surge in applications for the U.S. Secret Service reflects a renewed interest in federal law enforcement careers following significant policy shifts under President Trump’s administration.

By focusing on merit-based hiring practices, the DHS aims to enhance national security while addressing past challenges faced by law enforcement agencies under previous policies.
