Mayor Kate Gallego of Phoenix is set to honor Denise Resnik, a renowned autism advocate and business leader, with the Global Citizen Award during The Mayor’s International event on October 19 at Chateau Luxe.

This recognition highlights Resnik’s tireless efforts in advancing autism-friendly initiatives both locally and globally.

Recognizing a Local Advocate

Phoenix is known for its vibrant community and commitment to inclusivity. Denise Resnik, a native Phoenician, has been at the forefront of this movement for decades.

As the founder of First Place AZ and co-founder of the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC), Resnik has dedicated her life to improving the quality of life for people with autism and other neurodiverse conditions.

Her influence extends beyond Phoenix, shaping initiatives that have gained international recognition.

Mayor Gallego expressed her admiration for Resnik’s work, saying,

“Denise is improving the quality of life for countless people on the autism spectrum here in Phoenix and worldwide.”

This statement underscores the impact Resnik has had on the community and her dedication to making Phoenix a more inclusive city.

The Event: A Celebration of Global Connections

The Mayor’s International event, organized by Phoenix Sister Cities, will take place on October 19 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Chateau Luxe, located at 1175 E. Lone Cactus Dr.

The evening will not only celebrate Resnik’s contributions but also honor Phoenix’s sister cities: Prague, Czech Republic, and Suwon, South Korea.

This event, which brings together leaders and community members, features:

  • A unique menu inspired by Phoenix, Prague, and Suwon cuisine.
  • Performances by the Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre, sponsored by the Czech Consulate General in Los Angeles.

Tickets are available for the public at $200, with a special rate of $100 for young professionals. This gathering is an opportunity for attendees to engage with international cultures and support a cause that strengthens the Phoenix community.

Denise Resnik’s Impact on Autism Advocacy

Resnik’s journey in autism advocacy began with the founding of SARRC in 1997 and later expanded with First Place AZ in 2012. Both organizations aim to create sustainable housing and support options for adults with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs).

Through her work, Resnik has partnered with government bodies, private companies, and nonprofits to create solutions that empower neurodiverse individuals.

Her work has led to significant recognition for Phoenix. In 2016, PBS NewsHour highlighted the city as “the most autism-friendly city in the world.”

This accolade stems from the collaborative efforts of First Place AZ, SARRC, and their many partners, showcasing the city’s innovative approach to neurodiversity.

Below is a summary of First Place AZ’s impact:

2023 10 11
2022 8 10

Expanding International Collaboration

First Place AZ isn’t stopping at local impact. The organization has welcomed leaders from countries like England, Canada, India, and Ireland throughout 2024 alone.

Furthermore, its Global Leadership Institute Symposiums, which facilitate discussions and collaborations on autism housing and community models, have become international forums for sharing ideas and fostering global partnerships.

These events provide leaders from around the world with the opportunity to learn from Phoenix’s success and implement similar models in their own countries. The next symposium is scheduled for October 16-18, further emphasizing Resnik’s ongoing commitment to making a difference.

An Evening of Community and Recognition

Phoenix residents have a chance to support this transformative work and celebrate a local hero. As Mayor Gallego presents the Global Citizen Award to Denise Resnik, the event will spotlight Phoenix’s dedication to diversity, inclusion, and international cooperation.

This occasion isn’t just an award ceremony; it’s a moment for the city to reflect on its values and look toward the future with optimism.
