The U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, collaborates with the Zambian army to host the African Land Forces Summit 2024 in Livingstone, Zambia. This event gathers military chiefs, academic leaders, and officials from across Africa and Europe to address regional and transnational issues through cooperative dialogue.

In the heart of Livingstone, Zambia, the U.S. and Zambian armies forge a path towards regional security.

From April 22 to 26, 2024, this vibrant town hosts the African Land Forces Summit 2024, a critical gathering co-hosted by the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, and the Zambian Army.

The event brings together military chiefs from over 40 nations, academics, and government officials, all converging to tackle shared security challenges and devise collaborative solutions.

Regional Security at the Forefront

The summit addresses a spectrum of urgent issues—human trafficking, mass migration, environmental degradation, and the impacts of climate change—problems that cross borders and challenge national sovereignty.

“Africa’s security challenges are complex and intertwined with ethnic, geographical, and cultural factors,”

explained Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder during his opening remarks.

The discussions focus on crafting regional strategies to tackle these transnational issues, emphasizing the necessity of unity in confronting threats that are too vast for any single nation to handle alone.

Collaborative Frameworks and Outcomes

One of the summit’s key highlights is the announcement of new state partnership programs between North Carolina, Zambia, and Malawi.

These partnerships are set to enhance military-to-military engagement and facilitate broader interagency cooperation.

Maj. Gen. Todd R. Wasmund notes,

“These collaborations are not just about security; they’re about building lasting relationships that span multiple sectors.”

Cultural and Educational Engagements

Beyond the conference rooms, the summit also offers cultural and educational engagements. Participants joined local schoolchildren in a tree-planting ceremony, symbolizing a commitment to environmental stewardship and community involvement.

Additionally, the Zambian army’s special forces showcased their capabilities in a dynamic military demonstration, providing a glimpse into the skill and readiness of the host nation’s defense forces.

Summit Insights from Experts

Throughout the summit, panels and speeches shed light on the theme “Regional Solutions to Transnational Problems.”

Defense Minister Ambrose L. Lufuma emphasized,

“The solutions to Africa’s challenges should come from within, in partnership with our global allies.”

These sessions provided a platform for sharing best practices and innovative approaches to security, peacekeeping, and regional cooperation.

Looking Forward

As the summit concluded, the path forward was clear. The dialogues and decisions taken here set the stage for future engagements and initiatives.

“This summit has planted seeds for a safer, more cooperative Africa,”

Maj. Gen. Ryder remarked in the closing session.

The commitments made promise to foster ongoing collaboration, aiming to stabilize and strengthen regional security across the continent.

Summary

The African Land Forces Summit 2024 underscores its pivotal role in shaping regional and global security strategies. Leaders prioritize open dialogue, cooperation, and peace-building, transcending borders and generations.
