The Ministry of Defence has unveiled plans for a new “silent hangar” at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire. Set to be one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe, this state-of-the-art test centre will play a crucial role in safeguarding military equipment from the growing threat of GPS jamming.

Building the Silent Hangar

Under a £20 million contract, QinetiQ, a leader in defence technology, will construct this advanced facility, which is scheduled to open in 2026. The hangar is designed to house some of the UK’s largest military assets, including Protector drones, Chinook helicopters, and F-35 fighter jets.

Its anechoic design will allow for testing in an environment free from external electromagnetic interference, making it possible to simulate the most hostile operational scenarios.

Enhancing National Security

The silent hangar represents a significant enhancement in the UK’s ability to protect its military assets. By simulating environments where GPS jamming is a threat, the facility will ensure that equipment remains operational even in the most challenging conditions. Maria Eagle, Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that it will eliminate vulnerabilities and better protect the Armed Forces during global deployments.

“This cutting-edge test facility will help us eliminate vulnerabilities from our platforms, protect our national security, and keep our Armed Forces better protected on global deployments,” said Minister Eagle.

Local Impact and Opportunities

Beyond its military applications, the facility will also bring economic benefits to the local community around Boscombe Down.

“Over the next two years, we will create new roles, enhancing the region’s pool of electromagnetic expertise and contributing to the UK’s growing skillset in this critical area.

The hangar will also be available for use by wider government, industry, and critical national infrastructure, further extending its impact”.

The Role of QinetiQ

Will Blamey, Chief Executive of QinetiQ’s UK Defence division, highlighted the strategic importance of the hangar in strengthening the resilience of military equipment.

“On an increasingly digital battlefield, the debilitating effects of electronic warfare are a persistent threat,” Blamey said. “The testing we will conduct using this new facility will be integral to strengthening the resilience of military equipment, which in turn enhances the safety and security of our Armed Forces and the United Kingdom.”

A Strategic Investment in Defence

The introduction of this facility is a clear demonstration of the UK’s proactive approach to countering the challenges posed by electronic warfare.

The silent hangar, equipped with advanced capabilities, will ensure that the UK’s military equipment remains protected and capable of performing under the most extreme conditions.

Moving Forward

As the UK continues to bolster its defence infrastructure, the silent hangar at Boscombe Down will be instrumental in maintaining the operational integrity of military assets.

This strategic investment not only safeguards national security but also positions the UK as a leader in defence technology and innovation.
