Every summer, the hallowed grass courts of the UK’s Wimbledon witness the world’s finest tennis players vying for glory.

But this year, the courts also hosted a different kind of competition—one that brought together everyday tennis enthusiasts from across the UK in the “Play Your Way to Wimbledon 2024,” powered by Vodafone.

The Largest Grassroots Tennis Competition in the UK

The “Play Your Way to Wimbledon” competition is more than just a tournament; it’s a celebration of grassroots tennis in the UK. This year, it culminated in the largest finals to date, featuring a wide range of categories, from junior singles to wheelchair tennis, with over 20 titles up for grabs.

Thousands of hopefuls battled it out from March onwards, leading to a thrilling conclusion at Wimbledon in August.

Champions Crowned at Wimbledon

The competition saw 27 winners emerge, each representing the spirit of perseverance and love for the sport. Among the notable champions were:

  • Boys 14 and Under Singles: Caelen McKechnie
  • Girls 14 and Under Singles: Isabella Johri
  • Boys 18 and Under Doubles: Dimitar Lalov and Luke Ogden
  • Girls 18 and Under Doubles: Edie McGuinness and Jessica McLean
  • Men’s Doubles: Georgiy Lesyuk and Tristan Scurr
  • Ladies’ Doubles: Lottie Forsyth and Chandani Rathnam
  • Mixed Learning Disability: Fabrice Higgins
  • Men’s Wheelchair: Mark Langeveld
  • Ladies’ Wheelchair: Fay Dutfield-Horton

Edie McGuinness, winner of the Girls 18 and Under Doubles, expressed her excitement, saying,

“We’re proud – we can’t believe we’ve won it because we didn’t think we were going to win at the start of this, but I’m glad we did.”

Vodafone’s Role in Promoting Accessibility

Vodafone’s involvement in the competition goes beyond sponsorship. The company has been instrumental in promoting accessibility in tennis, ensuring that the sport is more inclusive than ever. This year marked the introduction of a junior wheelchair pathway, as well as exhibitions of para standing and deaf tennis, making the competition a pioneering event in the tennis world.

To further enhance the experience for visually impaired fans, Vodafone also trialled 5G-powered GiveVision headsets at Wimbledon in 2023. These headsets allowed users to watch live tennis with unprecedented clarity, opening up new possibilities for fan engagement.

Tim Henman, former British No.1 and Vodafone Ambassador, emphasized the importance of the event:

“Play Your Way to Wimbledon, powered by Vodafone, is an incredible opportunity for people from every walk of life to pick up a racket and get involved, and it’s been great to see so many taking part.”

The Future of Grassroots Tennis

As “Play Your Way to Wimbledon” continues to grow, it’s clear that grassroots tennis in the UK is thriving. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and The All England Lawn Tennis Club, which organize the event, are committed to making tennis accessible to all.

LTA-registered venues across the country are already gearing up for next year’s competition, ready to inspire the next generation of tennis champions.

Some of the competition’s notable categories and winners:
