In a move to bolster UK-Ghana relations, Lord Collins’ visit marks a renewed focus on sustainable development. During his stay in Ghana, the Minister will launch a £3.8 million initiative, in collaboration with the Shell Foundation, to provide clean energy solutions for small businesses.

This programme aims to replace petrol generators with sustainable battery systems, benefiting local enterprises and promoting green energy.

Additionally, Lord Collins will announce a £500,000 food fortification programme to address nutritional deficiencies and support communities affected by drought. These efforts align with the UK’s broader goals of enhancing food security and economic stability in Ghana.

Advancing Trade and Investment in Senegal

Lord Collins’ visit to Senegal underscores a commitment to deepening trade ties and fostering investment. Leading a delegation of 40 UK companies, he will explore new opportunities for collaboration, particularly in the infrastructure sector.

His agenda includes discussions on the UK’s significant investment in Senegal’s industrial strategy and infrastructure, including the Dakar Bus Rapid Transit System—a pioneering electric bus network in sub-Saharan Africa.

A major highlight of the visit is the announcement of £7.24 million in UK funding for the Women’s Integrated Sexual Health (WISH) Dividend programme.

This initiative aims to enhance reproductive health services, potentially preventing nearly 400,000 unintended pregnancies and saving £24.3 million in healthcare costs.

Supporting Women’s Empowerment and Education

Empowering women and improving access to reproductive health are central to Lord Collins’ agenda.

The new WISH programme, in partnership with MSI Senegal and various international organisations, will expand vital services for women and girls. This programme highlights the UK’s dedication to supporting gender equality and health in Senegal.

Furthermore, the British Council’s English Connects programme will be launched, aiming to increase English language learning in Senegalese secondary schools. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance educational opportunities and strengthen ties between the UK and Senegal.

Quotes from Officials

Lord Collins of Highbury stated,

“The UK is reconnecting with the world. We are deepening our relationships with our African counterparts based on genuine respect, focusing on partnerships that deliver mutually beneficial and sustainable investment and growth.”

Alain Christian Mbengue, MSI Senegal’s Country Director, expressed gratitude for the investment:

“Through this funding, we will expand access to lifesaving services and support women and girls in reaching their full potential.”

The Bottom Line

Lord Collins’ visit to Ghana and Senegal signifies a robust commitment to fostering economic growth, environmental sustainability, and women’s empowerment in West Africa.

By strengthening these partnerships, the UK aims to build a more prosperous future for both regions.
