Global AI leaders will gather in San Francisco on 21-22 November 2024 to address pressing issues surrounding artificial intelligence safety.

The UK government, co-hosting with the Centre for the Governance of AI, is driving this effort to ensure that commitments made at the AI Seoul Summit are implemented ahead of the AI Action Summit in France, 2025.

A Crucial Meeting for AI Safety

The upcoming conference reflects the UK’s ambition to lead in the global AI safety conversation. Bringing together AI developers, researchers, and policymakers from around the world, the event aims to turn high-level commitments into actionable safety frameworks.

The focus will be on developing safeguards that can mitigate the most severe risks associated with AI technology, from misuse by malicious actors to unanticipated AI failures.

Peter Kyle, the UK Secretary for Science, Innovation and Technology, expressed the significance of the event, stating,

“The conference is a clear sign of the UK’s ambition to further the shared global mission to design practical and effective approaches to AI safety.”

Discussions on AI Safety Frameworks

The discussions in San Francisco will build upon agreements made earlier in the year, when 16 global companies, spanning nations such as the US, South Korea, China, and the EU, committed to enhancing AI safety standards.

These companies are expected to present detailed frameworks addressing issues such as:

  • Tackling severe AI risks and misuse
  • Halting the deployment of AI models that cannot ensure sufficient safety
  • Ensuring transparency in AI development and risk management

Workshops will be held to refine these frameworks, fostering international collaboration in the development of safety solutions.

The conference will act as a pivotal moment for AI developers to exchange ideas, evaluate current safety standards, and prepare for the AI Action Summit in 2025.

Leading Role of the UK’s AI Safety Institute

The UK’s AI Safety Institute (AISI) is playing a crucial role in this global effort. As the world’s first state-backed body focused entirely on AI safety, it has spearheaded initiatives to align AI safety measures across borders.

Established at Bletchley Park in 2023, AISI has continued to expand its influence by working closely with international bodies and contributing to the creation of a growing network of AI safety institutes around the world.

Building Towards the AI Action Summit

This San Francisco conference is a significant step towards the larger AI Action Summit, scheduled to take place in France in February 2025. The UK government aims to ensure that the safety frameworks developed by leading AI companies are robust and ready for international implementation.

The collaboration among global leaders highlights the importance of transparency and cross-border cooperation in AI governance.

Peter Kyle further noted,

“We’re just months away from the AI Action Summit, and the discussions in San Francisco will give companies a clear focus on where and how they can bolster their AI safety plans.”

A Broader Push for Global AI Governance

The timing of this event also coincides with a broader push by international governments to ensure the ethical development of AI technologies. On the days leading up to the UK-hosted conference, the US will convene the first meeting of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes, also in San Francisco.

This network aims to align efforts on AI safety testing and regulation among leading global institutes.

With AI rapidly advancing, the need for collective action has never been more apparent. The UK’s efforts to drive forward the conversation on AI safety and governance set a clear example for the world.

As companies and governments alike prepare for the future, ensuring AI is safe, transparent, and beneficial remains at the heart of these international discussions.

What to Expect

The San Francisco conference represents a critical milestone on the road to AI safety. As developers gather to exchange insights and refine their safety frameworks, the outcome of these discussions will shape the future of AI governance.

The global AI community will be watching closely as the UK continues to lead these efforts, ensuring that AI technologies are used responsibly and ethically across the world.
