The UK is deepening its ties in Asia as Foreign Secretary David Lammy embarks on a diplomatic mission to Indonesia and South Korea.

His visit emphasizes green growth, security, and strategic collaborations, aiming to foster sustainable development and fortify international partnerships with these influential G20 nations.

Building a Greener, Secure Future in Indonesia

Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s arrival in Jakarta marks a new chapter in UK-Indonesia relations. The visit coincides with the inauguration of Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto, symbolizing a fresh start for the partnership between the two countries.

As they celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, Lammy’s agenda prioritizes green innovation and clean energy transitions.

The UK is stepping up efforts to forge a deeper strategic partnership with Indonesia, focusing on sustainable growth.

According to Lammy,

“Indonesia is a key player in our fight to tackle the climate crisis.”

His visit includes meetings with Indonesian companies supported by UK expertise, showcasing green technology and sustainable infrastructure development.

Lammy’s focus isn’t just about environmental collaboration; it also extends to security measures. By partnering with Indonesia, the UK aims to strengthen defense capabilities while promoting economic growth through eco-friendly technologies.

Advancing Security and Clean Energy with South Korea

After Indonesia, Lammy’s next stop is South Korea, where he will engage in high-level discussions on defense and green energy cooperation. South Korea, another crucial G20 power, shares the UK’s vision for sustainable development and stability.

The Foreign Secretary’s itinerary includes a visit to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), emphasizing the significance of regional security on the Korean Peninsula.

To reinforce the UK-South Korea alliance, Lammy is set to announce the inaugural UK-South Korea Foreign and Defence Ministerial 2 + 2 Dialogue.

This initiative aims to bolster cooperation in defense and energy sectors. Consequently, it reflects the UK’s commitment to working with global partners in addressing threats like North Korea’s ongoing missile development and its implications for regional stability.

In addition to defense, Lammy’s visit focuses on climate cooperation. At Ewha Women’s University, he will meet with climate leaders to explore collaborative efforts in clean energy transition and female leadership in environmental policy.

The Foreign Secretary noted,

“Our South Korean partners have stood side-by-side with us… preserving regional stability here on the Korean peninsula.”

Initiatives and Collaborative Dialogues

  • Ministerial 2 + 2 Dialogue: A newly established consultation platform to address regional and global security challenges, improving resilience against shared threats.
  • Hybrid Threats Dialogue: This new forum aims to enhance cooperation on issues like cybersecurity and information warfare, both vital for national security.

By integrating these initiatives, the UK reinforces its commitment to strengthening international ties and advancing green and defense-oriented technologies.

Empowering the Green Revolution

Lammy’s visit also underscores the UK’s international leadership in climate initiatives. In both Indonesia and South Korea, he highlights the UK’s capabilities in supporting green energy projects.

For instance, UK-backed firms in Indonesia are spearheading sustainable developments, contributing to Indonesia’s clean energy goals.

Meanwhile, in South Korea, Lammy’s discussions at Ewha University focus on promoting women’s roles in climate leadership.

His aim is to bridge the gap between policy and action, ensuring that the UK and South Korea can both benefit from each other’s expertise in renewable energy and eco-friendly technology.
