The UK’s Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) has released its annual equalities analysis for the 2024 GCSE, A-level, and vocational and technical qualifications (VTQs) results.

This analysis, led by Dr. Ian Stockford, Executive Director for Standards, provides insights into how attainment gaps among students with different protected characteristics and socio-economic statuses have evolved.

Stable Overall Results with Notable Exceptions

The overall GCSE results for 2024 remain similar to those of 2023, with 21.7% of students achieving grades 7 and above, compared to 21.6% in the previous year.

Student Characteristic

Description

Applicable Qualifications

1. Prior Attainment All
2. Ethnicity All
3. Gender All
4. SEND Status Special Educational Needs and Disabilities All
5. Free School Meal Eligibility All
6. Socio-economic Status Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) All
7. First Language GCSE, A level
8. Region GCSE, A level
9. Type of School/College GCSE, A level
Note: “All” indicates that the characteristic is considered for all qualifications, while “GCSE, A level” indicates that it is only considered for those specific qualifications.

Independent Schools vs. Academies: Widening Gap

One of the most significant findings is the widening attainment gap between students in independent schools and those in academies.

In 2024, students in independent schools achieved higher outcomes than their counterparts in academies, a trend that has been observed since 2023. Although the gap has widened slightly, it remains narrower than in pre-pandemic years (2018-2021).

Narrowing Gaps in VTQs

There were also notable improvements in some vocational and technical qualifications. The analysis revealed a small number of instances where the attainment gaps between different prior attainment and ethnicity groups narrowed in VTQs.

This suggests that efforts to address disparities in these areas are yielding positive results.

Control for Student Characteristics

Ofqual’s analysis is meticulous in controlling for a range of student characteristics to ensure meaningful conclusions can be drawn. This approach helps in understanding the genuine impact of different factors on student attainment.

To Sum Up

The 2024 equalities analysis shows most attainment gaps remain unchanged, but targeted efforts are making a positive difference slowly. Insights will be crucial for policymakers and educators to address disparities and ensure fairness and equality in evolving assessments.

Ofqual will maintain focus on quality and fairness for all students, monitoring trends and analyzing data continually and closely.

The widening gap between independent schools and academies highlights the ongoing need for equitable education policies and targeted support measures.
