Gaza Healthcare Crisis Demands Immediate Action

UK condemns deteriorating healthcare situation, demands civilian and medical staff protection, and urges immediate ceasefire amidst catastrophic humanitarian implications.

The UK has strongly condemned the deteriorating healthcare situation in Gaza, describing it as completely unacceptable, in a statement delivered at the UN Security Council.

UK Statement at the UN Security Council on Gaza’s Healthcare Crisis

The statement, made by Ambassador Barbara Woodward, UK Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted the dire conditions in Gaza following the destruction and damage of many medical facilities and the loss of over 1,000 medical personnel since 7 October 2023.

Devastating Impact on Medical Services and Civilian Welfare

Ambassador Woodward emphasized that the forcible evacuation of Kamal Adwan hospital has left no functioning hospitals in the North Gaza Governorate. This has compounded issues such as acute child malnutrition, the risk of imminent famine, and the spread of infectious diseases.

The UK reiterated its demand for the protection of civilians and medical staff in line with international humanitarian law, urging Israel to ensure access to vital medical care and enable medical practitioners to operate safely.

Humanitarian and Legal Implications

The UK condemned the use of civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, by Hamas, which puts Palestinian civilians and medical staff at risk.

However, the UK stressed that the obligations to protect hospitals and healthcare workers under international humanitarian law are unconditional. The statement also underscored the essential role of UNRWA in delivering medical services and rejected attempts to undermine its mandate.

Statistics

  • Over 1,000 medical personnel killed, injured, or detained
  • No functioning hospitals in North Gaza Governorate
  • Acute child malnutrition and risk of imminent famine

Leadership Response

The deterioration of the healthcare situation in Gaza is completely unacceptable. We call for civilians and medical staff to be protected in line with international humanitarian law.

Ambassador Barbara Woodward, UK Permanent Representative to the UN.

The UK’s stance reflects a broader international concern for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the need for immediate action to protect civilians and medical personnel.

Progress

  • The UK committed an additional $16.5 million to UNRWA to support vital services, including medical care
  • Support for the provision of essential healthcare through funding to UK-Med for a field hospital and other healthcare services in Gaza
  • Push for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages held by Hamas

Regional Impact

The crisis in Gaza has severe local and regional implications, with families facing extreme hunger and appalling conditions without access to basic services or healthcare.

The UK emphasized that northern Gaza must not be cut off from the south, and Palestinian civilians must be allowed to return to their communities and rebuild.

Immediate Implications and Broader Significance

The immediate implications of the deteriorating healthcare situation in Gaza are catastrophic, with widespread suffering and a significant risk of famine.

The broader significance lies in the need for a sustainable solution to the conflict, ensuring long-term peace and stability through a two-state solution that affords Palestinians their right to self-determination alongside security for Israel.

Looking Ahead

As the situation continues to deteriorate, the international community must remain vigilant and proactive in addressing the humanitarian crisis.

The UK’s commitment to securing a ceasefire, releasing hostages, and ensuring aid reaches all parts of Gaza is crucial in mitigating the current disaster and paving the way for future peace and stability.
