The UK government has announced an expansion of Operation Ascend, a career support service designed to help veterans transition into civilian careers.

This initiative aims to provide comprehensive job support for all veterans, regardless of when they left service, by collaborating with industry bodies and offering guidance on entering new sectors.

Expanded Career Support for Veterans

Operation Ascend is set to enhance career support for thousands of veterans and their families across the UK. By broadening its scope, the program will offer services such as CV writing assistance, interview preparation, and advice on transitioning into emerging sectors like energy and data.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to integrating veterans into meaningful employment opportunities.

Collaboration with Industry Bodies

The success of Operation Ascend relies heavily on collaboration with industry bodies. Over 300 businesses have already been engaged to understand the benefits of hiring veterans.

This partnership ensures that businesses are equipped to leverage the unique skills and experiences that veterans bring to the workforce, fostering a more inclusive environment.

Opportunities in Emerging Sectors

  • Guidance on transitioning into sectors like energy and data
  • Support for entering construction and other growing industries
  • Access to a diverse talent pool with strategic planning skills
  • Potential for innovation driven by veterans’ problem-solving abilities

Program Details

Category Description
Funding £2.1 million allocated for Operation Ascend and veteran engagement programs
Beneficiaries 3,000 veterans and family members have benefited so far
Business Engagements Over 300 businesses involved in understanding veteran hiring benefits

The Importance of Veteran Integration in Civilian Careers

This expansion is crucial not only for supporting individual veterans but also for boosting economic growth by integrating them into the workforce.

Veterans Minister Alistair Carns emphasized that this initiative empowers veterans to succeed in meaningful careers while maintaining their skills.

“This government is committed to renewing the nation’s contract with those who serve and have served.

Op ASCEND is a natural extension to the government’s resettlement scheme, enabling veterans and their families to further maximise their potential and take their careers to the next level.

This is about delivering a clear, easily accessible offering for veterans. From the time they join, to the time they leave service and beyond, veterans will be empowered to succeed, whether that be in protection of our nation, or through meaningful careers which maintain and develop their skills.”

Ian Fortune from Centrica highlighted how working with Operation Ascend has brought diversity and fresh perspectives into their organization.

“Working with the Forces Employment Charity through the delivery of Op ASCEND has enabled high-calibre service leavers and the wider military family to bring their significant talent and skillsets into our organisation with confidence.

With fantastic Pathways events such as Women Into Employment, we have been bringing diversity of thought, background and experience into our company and with it, fresh perspectives and thinking that is helping to energise a greener, fairer, future.”

Sam, a British Army veteran who recently secured a role as a physical oil trading contracts analyst in the energy industry thanks to Op ASCEND, said:

“I found Op ASCEND online, and was assigned a mentor to help me navigate the process. There’s the intangible side of the service – knowing there’s people around that care, are interested and want to see you succeed.

Knowing you can connect with an advisor, write to them or call them up if you’re having problems and get some advice. Then there’s the tangible impact of the employment events – they’re actionable, you can go ahead and do something with it.”
