The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and the Fukushima Institute for Research, Education and Innovation (F-REI) have signed a memorandum of cooperation to advance robotics and autonomous systems research.

This collaboration, initiated on March 4, 2025, at UKAEA’s Culham Campus, aims to enhance nuclear decommissioning processes and foster innovation in challenging environments.

Strengthening UK-Japan Scientific Ties

The partnership between UKAEA and F-REI marks a significant step in strengthening scientific ties between the UK and Japan.

By focusing on robotics and autonomous systems, this collaboration is set to drive advancements in nuclear decommissioning and advanced manufacturing.

The agreement underscores the UK’s commitment to international cooperation in science and technology.

Robotics Revolutionizing Nuclear Safety

For communities near nuclear facilities, this partnership promises enhanced safety measures through improved efficiency in nuclear operations.

The development of cutting-edge technologies could lead to safer decommissioning processes, reducing risks associated with nuclear waste management.

This initiative also supports talent development by fostering partnerships that nurture skills essential for future technological advancements.

Innovation Across Industries

This collaboration extends beyond nuclear applications; it has potential implications for other sectors such as agriculture.

Robotics developed for challenging environments can be adapted to improve efficiency in farming practices. Such innovations highlight the broader impact of this partnership on various industries within the UK.

Insights from Industry Leaders

  • Prof. Rob Buckingham emphasized the opportunity to expand UK-Japan engagement across government, industry, and academia.
  • Dr. Koetsu Yamazaki highlighted how F-REI’s objectives align with those of UKAEA, enhancing Japan’s scientific capabilities.
  • The collaboration builds on previous initiatives by UKAEA’s RACE centre in developing next-generation robotics for extreme environments.

UKAEA’s Executive Director, Prof. Rob Buckingham, commented:

“We are delighted to collaborate with F-REI, as both organisations share a strong commitment to advancing science and innovation in key technical areas, including robotics and autonomous systems.

UKAEA has established robust partnerships with leading Japanese organisations, and this collaboration marks an exciting opportunity to expand those connections.

By leveraging our shared experience and expertise, I am confident we can further strengthen UK-Japan engagement across government, industry, and academia, driving cutting-edge advancements with real-world impact.”

F-REI’s President, Dr. Koetsu Yamazaki, remarked:

“F-REI and UKAEA share complementary objectives in research, innovation, education, and commercialisation.

The UKAEA’s extensive experience in developing productive research programmes, educational initiatives, innovation and commercialisation pipelines, and collaborative research facilities offers valuable lessons that can significantly benefit F-REI’s startup goals.

We are also excited to enhance Japan’s scientific and technological capabilities and industrial competitiveness through this international collaboration.”
