The UK government has launched a new Board of Trade to support small businesses and boost global exports, aiming to help SMEs thrive by leveraging the expertise of prominent CEOs and business leaders.

This initiative coincides with an SME summit at Wilton Park, addressing challenges like access to finance and digital technologies.

Revamped Board of Trade

The UK government’s announcement of a new Board of Trade marks a significant step in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

By including notable figures such as Mike Soutar and Michelle Ovens CBE, the board aims to drive growth and increase exports.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance trade post-Brexit, aligning with previous efforts like the Export Academy.

SME Summit Insights

The SME summit at Wilton Park brings together SMEs, trade bodies, and government officials to inform strategies for small businesses. Discussions focus on important issues such as access to finance and digital technology adoption.

The event highlights the importance of providing SMEs with the necessary tools to succeed in international markets.

Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said:

“Small businesses are the driving force of our economy, both at a local and national level, which is why, as part of our Plan for Change we’re determined to ensure that all SMEs have the tools at their disposal to thrive.”

“The new Board of Trade will be another tool in our arsenal to get more businesses trading around the world and taking advantage of our fantastic FTAs. This won’t be a chin-stroking talking shop, because I’ll be urging them to boost exports and get more SMEs trading across all their sectors.”

“Because we know that when more small firms export, it leads to more jobs and higher wages and grows the economy.”

Boosting SME Exports

Increasing SME exports is crucial for economic growth and job creation in the UK. The new Board of Trade seeks to enhance export opportunities for SMEs by leveraging expert advice from industry leaders.

This move could significantly effect local communities by fostering entrepreneurship and creating more resilient economies through increased SME activity.

Opportunities for Growth

  • Enhanced support for SMEs through expert guidance
  • Increased access to international markets
  • Improved financial resources for business expansion
  • Accelerated adoption of digital technologies
  • Strengthened local economies through job creation

Small Business Minister Gareth Thomas said:

“For small businesses, getting off the ground is one of the hardest parts of scaling up, and central to that is the ability to access finance.”

“That’s why this Call for Evidence will be important to allow us to see what more needs to be done to support SMEs so they can go for growth.”

Tackling Financial Barriers

A major study on SME finance access has been launched to understand barriers and potential solutions. Small Business Minister Gareth Thomas emphasizes that accessing finance is central to scaling up operations.

The Call for Evidence will provide insights into what more needs to be done to support SMEs in their growth journey.

The Role of Digital Technologies in Export Success

The adoption of digital technologies is a key focus at the SME summit, with discussions centered on how these tools can enhance export capabilities.

By speeding up digital technology adoption among SMEs, businesses can improve productivity, cash flow, and expand their reach into global markets.
