British soldiers have successfully tested a new Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon (RFDEW) in West Wales, marking the largest counter-drone swarm exercise by the British Army.

This innovative technology offers a cost-effective solution to neutralize drone threats, enhancing national security and supporting economic growth through job creation.

Revolutionizing Defense Technology

The RFDEW represents a significant advancement in defense technology, utilizing high-frequency radio waves to disrupt drone electronics.

This innovation provides an efficient alternative to traditional missile systems, with each shot costing approximately 10p.

The successful trial underscores the UK’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities through cutting-edge technologies.

This development is particularly relevant given the increasing prevalence of drone threats at sensitive locations such as defense bases and airports.

By offering a cost-effective and efficient solution, RFDEW could significantly enhance security measures across the UK.

Economic and Security Benefits

  • The RFDEW project supports over 135 highly skilled jobs across the UK.
  • It contributes to economic growth by fostering innovation within the defense industry.
  • The technology enhances national security by effectively neutralizing drone threats.
  • RFDEW’s cost-effectiveness makes it an attractive alternative to missile-based systems.

Global Implications and Future Prospects

The international landscape highlights the urgency for effective counter-drone measures, as seen in combat zones like Ukraine.

The UK’s development of RFDEW could influence global defense strategies, potentially leading to collaborations or competitions in similar technologies.

However, challenges remain in refining this technology for operational use and addressing ethical considerations around its deployment.

Voices from Leaders

Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Rt Hon Maria Eagle MP, said:

“This significant experiment exemplifies the strength of British innovation – driven by our home-grown industry, technology firms and scientific talent.

We continue to strengthen our defence sector, adding more cutting-edge capabilities to keep the UK secure at home and strong abroad, while making defence an engine for growth across our towns and cities.”

Team Hersa, a partnership between the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and Defence Equipment & Support, completed the project. Thales UK is the leader of an industrial group that created the RF DEW demonstration.

During the project, over 100 drones were tracked, attacked, and destroyed using the weapon in all trials. The Army was able to successfully eliminate two drone swarms in a single battle.

Sgt Mayers, a Senior Remotely-Piloted Air Systems Operator from 106 Regiment Royal Artillery, had the honour of being the first British soldier to bring down drones using a radiofrequency weapon.

Sgt Mayers said:

“RF DEW is an exciting concept. We found the demonstrator quick to learn and easy to use. With improvements on range and power, which could come with further development, this would be a great asset to Layered Air Defence.”
