The G7 Foreign Ministers issued a joint statement on 9 May condemning the 22 April terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir.

They urged both India and Pakistan to show maximum restraint and avoid actions that could escalate the conflict. The call comes amid intensifying cross-border exchanges and growing international alarm.

Terrorism in Kashmir Sparks International Alarm

The attack in Pahalgam claimed dozens of lives and sharply intensified hostilities in the already fragile Kashmir region.

In the days following, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting militant infrastructure in Pakistan. In response, Pakistan retaliated with artillery shelling and drone strikes.

Civilian casualties are rising on both sides. Infrastructure in border regions, particularly in Indian-administered Kashmir and parts of Punjab, has suffered significant damage.

As both countries escalate their military responses, the international community has stepped in.

G7’s Statement: A Call for Calm

In an unusually pointed joint statement, the G7 ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and the EU condemned the terrorist act and voiced strong concern over regional stability.

“We urge maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan,” the statement read. “Further military escalation poses a serious threat to regional stability.”

The ministers also stressed the importance of dialogue, encouraging both governments to seek a peaceful resolution through direct talks—a diplomatic route that has not yet been initiated.

Growing Military Activity and Diplomatic Pressure

Heavy military exchanges have occurred since 6 May, including India’s airstrike campaign using Rafale fighter jets and Pakistan’s retaliatory artillery barrages in Poonch.

Both countries report drone incursions and missile interceptions.

Recent Events Driving Conflict

Date Event Side Claiming Responsibility Impact
22 April Pahalgam terrorist attack India blames Pakistan Dozens killed; conflict escalation
6–7 May Operation Sindoor (airstrikes) India Claimed militant casualties; aircraft losses
7–8 May Shelling in Poonch Both At least 15 civilians killed, infrastructure hit
8–9 May Drone/missile exchanges Both Damage in Amritsar, Jammu, Lahore
9 May G7, US, China urge de-escalation International Diplomatic push for restraint and direct dialogue

Behind the Scenes: Diplomatic Movement Begins

Despite military tensions, back-channel diplomacy is underway. The UK’s Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, has spoken to both Indian and Pakistani counterparts, echoing the G7’s call for calm.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has offered to facilitate talks.

Regional powers like Saudi Arabia and Iran are also involved, meeting officials in New Delhi to support peaceful negotiations.

While no formal talks have begun, Pakistan has signalled it may delay further military action to allow diplomacy a chance.

  • Direct communication between India and Pakistan remains absent.

  • Third-party mediation is actively underway through indirect channels.

Tensions High, But Window for Dialogue Remains

The situation remains volatile. Ceasefire violations continue. Mutual distrust clouds any prospect of immediate high-level talks. Yet, with increasing global scrutiny and diplomatic engagement, the possibility of de-escalation still exists—if only narrowly.

Both sides face internal pressure to act decisively while international partners urge diplomacy. As Pakistan holds off on further retaliation, the next few days could determine whether the region steps back from the brink—or slides further into conflict.
