Since January 20, 2025, the U.S. Coast Guard has seized 242,244 pounds of cocaine under President Trump’s administration, more than doubling the previous year’s amount.

This surge follows a strategic directive to triple resources along the southern maritime border, aiming to combat drug smuggling by sea and enhance national security.

Enhanced Maritime Operations

The U.S. Coast Guard has significantly increased its drug interdiction efforts since the beginning of President Trump’s administration in January 2025.

By seizing over 242,244 pounds of cocaine, they have more than doubled the amount intercepted during the same period in 2024. This achievement underscores a strategic shift towards combating drug smuggling via maritime routes.

The increase in seizures is attributed to President Trump’s directive to triple Coast Guard resources along the southern maritime border and approaches. This move reflects a broader strategy aimed at securing U.S. borders and disrupting international drug trafficking networks that operate primarily by sea.

Technological Advancements in Drug Interdiction

Recent operations have seen the use of sophisticated technology such as drones, aircraft, and advanced cutters like the Legend-class National Security Cutter James.

These tools have been instrumental in conducting successful interdictions and arrests during extended patrols on international waters.

The Coast Guard’s enhanced capabilities are crucial for intercepting approximately 80% of U.S.-bound drugs on high seas. Their efforts play a vital role in reducing the flow of lethal narcotics into American communities and addressing evolving smuggling tactics employed by cartels.

International Cooperation and Implications

The crackdown on drug trafficking involves operations primarily conducted in international waters near Latin America, particularly off the coasts of Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands. These areas are key transit zones for cocaine shipments destined for the United States.

Regional Partnerships

  • Collaborations with regional partners are essential for successful interdictions.
  • Operations may influence diplomatic relations with countries like Peru and Ecuador.
  • Sustained cooperation can lead to improved regional security dynamics.
  • Joint efforts highlight shared interests in combating transnational crime.

The U.S. southern border is an interconnected system… Our message to the cartels is this: We own the sea, not you…

– Adm. Kevin Lunday

Thanks to…the U.S. Coast Guard…these drugs will never hit American streets…

– Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin

Bottom Line

The ongoing efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard demonstrate a robust commitment to securing America’s borders against drug trafficking threats from major cartels like CJNG and Sinaloa.

As these operations continue to evolve with technological advancements and international cooperation, they remain central to enhancing national security and protecting American communities from narcotics-related harm.
