The UK government has announced £10.9 million in funding for the Scottish space sector.

This investment, revealed at the Farnborough International Airshow, will support five projects through the National Space Innovation Programme (NSIP), aimed at fostering innovation and growth in space technology.

Major Projects

Sustainable Hybrid: Accelerated Rocket Programme (SHARP)

Funding: £4,995,000
HyImpulse, based in Glasgow, will conduct a vertical launch of a sounding rocket, ultimately aiming to complete the second stage of an orbital rocket for testing. This project promises a fully integrated launch service for deploying small satellites to low Earth orbits.

Operational Hyperspectral Microwave Sounder-Satellite (OHMS-Sat)

Funding: £3,524,000
Led by Spire Global, in collaboration with STAR-Dundee Ltd, the Met Office, and RAL Space, this project aims to develop an operational mission to provide weather forecasting data to global numerical weather prediction centres, creating unique weather products.

Kick Starter Projects

DIGGER: Drilling and Integrated GigaHertz-Generated Energy Resource

Funding: £845,000
In partnership with the University of Strathclyde, UK Atomic Energy Authority, and SJE Space, this feasibility study explores the adaptation of terrestrial directed energy drilling for lunar exploration.

Direct Detection Receivers for Millimetre Wave Radiometry

Funding: £827,000
This project, led by UKRI/STFC/RAL Space, alongside the University of Glasgow and Spire Glasgow, aims to develop low-noise amplifier and detector technology for the next generation of atmospheric remote sensing instrumentation, with applications extending to security imaging and theft prevention.

TARS-IOD: In-Orbit Demonstration of Astro-Robotic System

Funding: £804,000
Lodestar Space Ltd., in collaboration with Growbotics and the University of Glasgow, will develop a modular robotic arm for space operations. This technology will equip the UK with capabilities for inspecting, protecting, and repairing vital assets beyond Earth.
