The UK government has announced an unprecedented £2 billion uplift to early years education funding, aiming to increase access to affordable childcare and improve school readiness. This investment forms part of the government’s larger Plan for Change, with ambitious milestones to shape the nation’s future.

A Vision for Better Beginnings

The funding expansion, effective from 2025-26, reflects the government’s mission to ensure every child is school-ready by age five. This historic investment also seeks to reduce the disparities caused by socioeconomic factors, supporting families, nurseries, and childminders across the UK.

Goals of the Initiative:

  • Deliver 30 hours of government-funded childcare.
  • Expand access to affordable, high-quality early education.
  • Equip 75% of children with a good level of development by 2028.

Breakdown of the Funding

The funding allocation is designed to address core areas of early education, including hourly rates, grants, and support programs for disadvantaged children.

Funding Aspect Investment Details
Hourly Rates Increase £11.54 for under 2s, £8.53 for 2-year-olds, £6.12 for 3-4-year-olds.
Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) Increased by 45% to £570 per eligible child annually.
Expansion Grant £75 million to create 70,000 new places and hire 35,000 staff.

This comprehensive funding approach ensures resources are distributed where they’re needed most, particularly in areas of high demand.

Supporting Families and Providers

With this uplift, families will have greater access to affordable childcare, enabling parents to balance work and family responsibilities effectively. Providers, including nurseries and childminders, will benefit from increased resources to enhance their services.

Benefits at a Glance:

  • Improved childcare affordability for working families.
  • Higher-quality learning environments for children.
  • Strengthened early years workforce through targeted investments.

Looking Ahead

The Plan for Change outlines long-term goals to transform early education into a robust, inclusive system.

By 2028, the government aims to set a record for the number of children starting school with strong developmental skills. This initiative also promises broader economic benefits, fostering a more equitable society.

Final Thoughts

This £2 billion investment signals the government’s commitment to early education as a cornerstone of the nation’s future. By prioritizing children’s school readiness and expanding childcare access, the initiative seeks to ensure every child has the best start in life.
